WAIAU PA
PROPOSED ROAD LOAN MONEY AVAILABLE At to-day's meeting of the Frank- \ lin County Council an announcement, which will be gladly welcomed by the residents of Waiau Pa, was made by the Clerk (Mr Alan P. Day) that a letter had been received from the Public Trustee intimating that ther Council's application for a £27,000 loan for metalling the main roads of Waiau and Karaka had been granted subject to the sufficiency and legality of the security, the arrangement hping that £7OOO would be available for the first year ' and £SOOO per annum for four years in succession. This roading scheme, it will be remembered, was initiated by Mr J. Henry, the ex-member for the Mauku Riding, and has been confirmed by the present Council. The Clerk was instructed to make arrangemsnts for the loan poll.
Lady residents of the district have lately been active in promoting a fund for establishing a public library and also a school library and as the result of socials and a personal canvass for subscriptions sufficient support has been obtained for the launching of the project. It was intended by the that the two libraries should be associated one with the other but that for thß school will now be quite distinct owing to the fact that the Education Board insists on such an arrangement if a Government subsidy is to be secured. An agreement has been arrived at with the Public Hall Committee for the public library to be housed in that building and dances are to be held monthly in aid of the library fund. Subscribers to the public library will be indirectly asssisting patriotic work as ten per cent of the library returns are to be devoted to the Red Cross Fund. The etablishment of a library in Waiau Pa is yet and visible another outward sign of the districts development. The annual meeting of the rublic Hall Committee was held on Saturday last, Mr A. G. Grinter presiding. A successful year was reported. Two new members were elected and the outgoing Committee were re-ap-pointed. A considerable area of land has been laid down for oats for next harvest and aleady about 120 acrM have been sown. Results having proved that the local soil is well adapted' for early potato growing that form of cropping is also being largely resorted to and planting is in full swing.
