BOMBAY
A concert and dance were held in the Bombay Hall on Friday, May 17th, to welcome back to Bombay Private A. J Wootten who left New Zealand with the 26th Reinforcements and who, after reaching England, was pronounced physically unfit for active service with the result that he returned to the Dominion after absence of twelve months. There was a crowded assembly of friends wellwishers and a very enjoyable evening was spent. The following contributed to the programme: Mrs Davis (pianoforte solo), Miss E. Gauntlett and Master Boy Common (recitations), Bombay 1 Schoolboys (nigger song and dance), | Miss D. Gauntlett, Messrs Barker, ; Leslie Wootton, and Laing (songs). M'*— N. McCowen accompanied. As chairman of the gathering, Mr J. Lowrie, m a neat speech, welcomed Private Wootten who suitably replied. After Bupper had been handed round the hall was cleared for dancing, Mr Barker supplying the muaio and Messrs A. Lawrie and B. Donovan being M.Cs. At a meeting of the Bombay Patriotic Committee on Friday last it was decided to present Private Wootten with a set of carvers, the I present not having been available at the time of the welcome social. It was also decided to hold a plain and fancy drees ball on June 21st next to help to raise funds for 'Xmas gifts for the boys at the front. TiMt Friday afternoon Mr Kirkman, in the absence through illness of Mr Pacty, addressed a well attended meeting of the Bombay suppliers of the N.Z. Dairy Association, Mr W. R. Cornthwaite being in the chair. At the close of the meeting a vote of thanks for past services and regret at his leaving the district was passed to Mr W. Watson, who suitably responded.
