PUBLIC HALL AND LIBRARY. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the subscribers of the Clevedon Public Hall and Library was held in the Library on thn evening of May 6th. It may be explained that the constitution is peculiar and stringent tnd dates bai'k to the year 1877. With respect to the rules governing the appointment of the Committee of Management, it is provided that the < 'ominittee (to the number of seven) are to be appointed at the annual meeting and only such persons can vote as are subscriber? to the library or who have donated not less than 'he sum of £1 to the Hall Funds. A like qualification is necessary in order to be eligible to sit on the Coil mi ttee and it is also necessary to be present at the meeting before one can be nominated. A member of the Committee missing three consecutive meetings without consent forfeits his rights to sit on the Committee and so on. Messrs A. D. BjII, W. J Hyde, C. Atchison, T. Fraser, Q. Atkins, J. Catton and A. Greenfield have been the Committee during; the past few years since there has' not been sufficient public interes* taken in local affairs to get together an annual meeting eligible to appoint a new committee and as a member of the Committee retains office —nolens volens—until such time as a new Committee is appointed The usual annual meeting in the past has consisted of the Treasurer (Mr A. D. Bell) and the Secretary (Mr T. Fruser. In order to endeavour to il f rr the existing state of coma a special effort was made this year to awaken interest in the matter, with the result that six residents of the "di-trict—Messrs C. C. After the Secretary had read the iiles respecting the appointment of ■Ulcers for the coming y«ar, the six yersons named made themselves financially eligible to vote and the ininu es of the last annual meeting •vre read and confirmed. The balance sheet, which showed a slightly larger credit balance than lust year, was put to the meeting and was adopted subject to being audited. The oflioors for the year were then appointed and as, according to the rules before stated, they were to be nominated from those present, the nominations were : Messrs A. D. rtell, U. C. Muuro, W. T. Duder, J. Luke, F. Stephens, J. A. Gandy and L H. Burgoyne. As it was necesthat whoever was appointed Secretary should be appointed as one of the seven on the Committee, and as Mr W. C Probert's name had been already mentioned in connection with the secretaryship, (Mr T. Fiaser wishing to resign after having filled the position for some twen'y years) Mr Burgoyne stated tha: he would v, i;li !raw his nomination. Mr Probert's name was accordingly substituted subject to his being appointed secretary. The Committee oeiiig thus appointed, Mr C. 0. Muuro wan elected Chairman, Mr A. li. He trusted that the incoming Committee would endeavour to improve nutters and that sufficient public interest wnu'd be aroused to enable the Committee to make the many improvements that were required to the buildings and grounds in order to brine: them up to date The hall was now far too small for the increased population, far more seating accommodation being required ; also lhe cloakrooms were far from sutisf ctory and he considered that it was time that a commencement was made to improve matters although it was during the present conditions brought about by the war not possible to do all that was wanted, still some of the minor matters could be improved. It was decided to have the gateway removed to a morn suitable position and to consider ways and means of having proper gravel paths laid down. Mr Luke gave notice of moti< n for next meeting that the feasibility of substituting a ben/iue gas plant for the present acetylene plant be considered.
