TUAKAU TOWN BOARD MONTHLY MEETING At the monthly meeting of the Tuakau Town Board, held on Tuesday last, there were present Messrs Dynes Fulton (Chairman), W. Barriaby, W.|Glaßgow, J. Pirret, J. F. Deeble and Captain Ryder, with the Clerk (Mr A. H. Tapper). rydeb's road A letter was road from Mrs F. Ryder asking that a portion of Ryder's road (about six chains in length) should be metalled and offering a contribution of £ls towards the work.—On the motion of Mr Deeble it was decided to do the work as soon as metal was available REQUEST FOR SCORIA An application was made by Mr McGahan for three yards of scoria. It was decided to accede to the request and it was at the same time remarked that any ratepayer was entitled to obtain scoria from the Board if required. GEORGE STREET ISRIDGE Arising out of the Engineer's Report the question of allowing a traction engine to pass over the temporary bridge in George street was discussed. Ultimately, on the motion of Mr Glasgow, it was decided that no traction engine should be allowed over the bridge. The Clerk was instructed to have a notice posted on the bridge to that effect. ASPHALTING FOOTPATHS The recommendation of the Board's Engineer (Mr J. Routly) to have the footpaths made of "Restar" and for the "Restar" Company's foreman to be engaged to do the work at stated wages was adopted. HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID IiJARD Notification was received from the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board stating that a contribution at the rate of one sixth of a penny in the £ on the capital value of £9G,9!10 was required from the Board for hospital purposes for the ensuing year. DEFECTIVE SEPTIC TANK The Engineer wrote advising that the effluent from the septic tank recently constructed by the Waikato Dairy Company at Tuakau was being conveyed into Bycroft's stream without filtration. _ He stated that liquid matter from the septic tank should be filtered and allowed to perculate from soak drains through several feet of soil before mixing with the stream water. It was resolved to communicate with the Waikato Dairy Co. on the subject. HARKI&VILLE ROAD Mr Barnaby drew attention to the need for a better footpath on the Harnsville road towards the school. On his motion it was agreed to write to the Franklin County Council on the subject. HATE The Chairman gave notice that at the next meeting of the Board he would move that a general rate of lid in the £ and a special rate of three-eighths of a penny should be struck to meet the expenses for the coming year.
ACCOUNTS Accounts amounting to £3G-1 15s 3d were passed for payment. The Board than went into Committee to consider the balance-sheet and other matters. SCHOOL MATTERS AT TUAKAU Although the recent annual ir-eet-ing of householders of the Tuakau School District passed off without any sign of the old feud " Town v South" being apparent recent happenings have shown that hostilities were only latent. A new form of struggle has developed, the Harrisville School Committee having entered into the fray. It may be explained that tlio Tuakau School caters for the district on the western side of the railway line, whereas Harrisville School comprises the district on the eastern side. Some time ago, it will bo i otuembered, despite protests from s nic of the residents of tin- township, the Education Hoard, to relieve th 9 overcrowding at the existing school at Tuakau South, decided to erect a " sideschool " on the Pukokohe road on Mr Glasgow's property, but the project has since remained in abeyance. Following on tho recent election of tho School Committee at Hairisville, Mr J. 11. 1 proposal and eleven against. The respective views of the Tuakau and Harrisville Committees were communicated to the Education Board at their meeting last Wednesday and the former's advocacy for Mr Glasgow's site prevailed, it being resolved to adhere to the previous decision and to apply for a grant for the purchase of the property in question.
