Private Edmund Smeed, who has died of wounds received in action, was the third son of Mr and Mrs T. Bmeed, of Tuakau. The deceased soldier, who was 24 years of age, wns born at Tuakau and was educated at the Whangarata Public School. After leaving school he was employed on his father's farm. Flaving a strong desire to see various parts of the It.iminion he travelled as far south as Invercargill working on farms in different districts. From kSouthl-ind he went to Australia, still following farming pursuits. Returning to New Zealand he worked at Hamilton and then at Gisborne. Whilst at Hamilton he volunteered for service but was medically rejected. With the object of becoming " fit "' he underwent an operation and subsequently passed the medical examination and left the Dominion with the 23rd Reinforcements, being attached to the Rille Brigade The deceased soldier had seen a good deal of service and from information to hand he apparently had only returned to the firing line after being in hospital, his second wounds being 'atal His elder brother after a year's service, during which he took pai-t in the battle of Messines, broke his leg, was discharged from the army and is now living at Tuakau, while his uncle, Private Ben Gill, of Tuakau, was recently killed in action.
