MERCER

A resident of Huntly visiting Mercer on April 20th (Regatta Day) made himself sociable with a couple of Maoris, for one of whom he purchased a bottle of beer and for the other a bottle of wine. Charged at the Pukekohe Magistrate's Court yesterday with having supplied natives with liquor for consumption off licensed premises, admission of guilt on behalf of the man was made by Mr J. Q. Haddow, who mentioned that at the time his client was under the influence of liquor. His Worship (Mr Wyvern Wilson) alluded to the gravity of the offence having regard to the necessity of keeping the drink away from Maoris. He fined defendant £5 and costs. The natives concerned for aiding and abetting in the offence were each fined £2 and 25s costs.
