A well-attended Anglican Church social was held in the Parish Hall on Wednesday evening last, the principal object being to raise funds for the cleaning of the Church. The Vicar (the Rev. H. Mason) presided. Among those who contributed to the musical portion of the programme were Mrs Shepherd, Mr A. McDonald and the Misses Celia McArthur and Nicholson. In connection with St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church a social as a farewell to Corporal Roy Brown and as a welcome home to Lance-Corporal J. McArthur was held in the Parish Hall on Friday evening. The Mayor (Mr A. McDonald) presided over the gathering and die Pastor, the Rev. J. Carrie, on behalf of the Church, in a neat speech wished Corporal Brown God Speed and a safe return. To Lance-Corporal McArthur he offered his kindest expressions of good-will and trusted the rest among his friends would be beneficial to him. Both suitably replied. Vocal and instrumental items were contri-\ buted during the evening as follows : Songs by Misses Celia McArthur, Emily Moffitt, Webster and Mr A. McDonald and a pianoforte duet by Mrs C. Fraser and Miss Emily Moffitt. Dancing was enjoyed by a large number and the function proved one of the most successful that had been held for * long time. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council will be held on Thursday evening next.
