PUKEKOHE BOROUGH COUNCIL

At the ordinary monthly meeting of the Pikekohe Bortugb Council, held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday evening' last, there were present the Mayor (Mr H. G. K. Mason), Crs A. B. Barter, G. H. Armstrong, R. Bilkey, F. J. Morrow, A. P. Daysh, J. Patterson, J. T. Stembridge, and 1). R. Hamilton, with the Town Clerk (Mr J. F. Deane) and the Consulting Engineer (Mr J. F. McArthur). BENZINE BTOR4OT. Replying to a request by the Borough Inspector (Mr L. C. A Potter) to remove a shed in which benzine had been stored Messrs F. Perkins and Co. stated that as there was no benzine stored there the instructions would not be required to be complied with They suggested that all benzine dealers should be required to erect a brick building for such storage.—The letter was referred to thfr By-laws Committee. A DELAYED WOEK Mr Claud Motion wrote reminding the Council that only half the work had been carried out in respect of repairing the road at the back of the dairy factory leading to his property. He said he had offered to contribute £2O as half the cost and asked 1 that the work should be completed before the wet weather set in.

The Mayor mentioned that he had explained to Mr Motion that the Council's men had been engaged on work in the main street.

It was resolved, on the motion of the Mayor, that if £2O was first contributed by Mr Motion the work would be proceeded with as soon as men were available and material could be secured RIGHT-OF-WAY A request was made by Mrs E. Morland that Mr F. O'Connor should be asked to metal the right-of-way to O'Connor's building in accordance with bis agreement with the Borough Council and the present owners. On the motion of the Mayor the matter was referred to the By-laws Committee with power to act. LOAN MONEY The State Advances Office, Wellington, notified the Council that the Governor had consented to the Council raising £750, the same being ten per cent, on the lighting and roads loans previously raised. EAST STREET Mr E. Smith, of East street, in a letter, enquired if the Council would pay half the cost of metalling the entrance to his and Mr Berridge's gate on his paying a moiety. He eaid that he contributed about £2O a year for rates. The application was granted provided half the cost of the work, as estimated by the Foreman, was first paid to the Town Clerk. OUTSTANDING RATES. Cr Stembridge drew attention to the fact that there, was about £2OO outstanding for rates. On the motion of Cr Barter it was resolved that the Finance Committee bhould confer with the Town Clerk as to the steps to be taken to enforce payment of the arrears Cr Stembridge also referred to the advisability of striking the rate earlier in the year and i: was agreed that the Finance Committee should submit an estimate of the rates required for the current year. On the motion of the Mayor it was also decided that the Works Com tnittee confer with the Engineer and submit a statement of the amount required in respect of works for the current year such works to be confined to maintenanca and work in hand but not completed. HELGIAN KOAD. On the Engineer reporting that a new bridge and culvert with about 12 chains of metal could be provided for £l7O towards the repairs of Belgian (late Eoose's) road Cr Patterson moved that the work should be carried out.

The Mayor recognised the need for the repair of the road but mentioned the financial position of the Council. He was afraid that if additional work was carried out aa extra rate would be necessary. Cr Bilkey was not in favour of raising the rates and advocated a loan for such work.

Cr Hamilton agreed as to the necessity for the work and the dangerous state of the road. Cr Barter proposed as an amendment that the sum of £SO should he spent on providing a bridge and culvert. On the amendment being put to the meeting only Crs Barter and Btembridtfe voted for it and the origiual motion that the work should be dune as esimated by the Engineer was carried, the remaining members of the Council supporting it. Cr Morrow mentioned that the setllers would help towards the work and it was arranged that the Works Committee should secure their assistance. PREMIKK 11A1.1,. Cr Barter reported that representations had been made to him by the Fire Brigade that the Premier Hall should be better ventilated. It was decided to obtain a report from the Consulting Engineer (Mr J. F. McArthur) as to the best

meanß of improving the ventilation and the Fire Brigade Committee were empowered to act on such report. morrow's road. A tender of Mr 8. Caddy for £75 for the work on Morrow's Road was accepted. FINANCE. The Town Clerk reported that the General Account had a ciedit balance of £lO5 and accounts amounting to £B6l 0s 3d were passed for payment.
