PAPATOETOE
BOWLING MATCHES. A number of Waiuku bowlers journeyed to Papatoetoe on Thursday afternoon last to try conclusions with the local Club and the match resulted in a win for the visitors by the narrow margin of nine points, the scores being: Waiuku 82, Papatoetoe 73. The following are the results, the names of the Papatoetoe players being given last in each instance :—Baraaby, Coady, Robertson, Barriball (skip), 23 v. J. Trimball, R. Gladding, J. Wa'eon, D. Reid (skip', 20. Greenhead, Higgiuson, Coote, Elmsly (skip) 24 v. Gane, Kirk, Bryant, Knight (skip), 14. Chalmers, Williams, Linwood. Neil (skip), 23 v. Swaffield, Willis, Tidmarsh, Cutforth (skip), 21. King, Herdson, Harris, Mearns (skip), 12 v. G. Bryett, Jenkins, Daisley, Spencer (skip), 18 On Saturday last an inter-club match, Papatoetoe v. Ponsonby, was played at Ponsonby, the following being the scores (names of Papatoetoe players first): Weston, Swaffield, Knight, Andrews, 21, v. Payne, Craig, Seath, McGregor, 23 ; Death, Galloway, Wilson, Reid. 23, v. Orams, Cleghoro, Kelly, Oswald, 24. Playing fcr the Clarke trophies, Watson and Rawnsley (challongers) 23 defeated Paisley and Knight (holders) 17. The semifinals for the championship singles have advanced another stage, Coles defeating Rawnsley on Saturlay last after a very close game. In the final stage Coles had a lead of one point on the 20th head ; Rawnsley then drew three which gave him a lead of two points,but Coles with his last bowl neatly drew the shot winning by two points. This now leaves Coles, Watson and Andrew in the final.
On Saturday next a Red Cross afternoon will be held on the local Bowling Green when the Boy Scouts Brass Band will be present and -will play selections during the afternoon. The anniversary concert a'nd prize distribution in connection with the Methodist Sunday School was held last Tuesday and was a marked succes*. The Rev. Harkness, missionary from Tonga, attended and gave a very interesting address on the ways and customs of_ the natives of thsoe Islands, exhibiting manv articles used by them in their everyday life. The annual report was very encouraging, showing that the Sunday School was steadily progressing. During the evening items were rendered by the scholars as follows : Pianoforte trios, the Misses Chapman ; solos, Miss Louie Reid ; duet, Miss Amy Matuschka and Master Clif. Firth; recitations, Misses B. Clark and Franks ; an item entitled " Paul's First Missionary Journey " given by ton girls was very much appreciated and a humorous dialogue " A Wife's Bad Debts " given by the members of the Bible Class was responsible for much laughter. At the conclusion a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Firth, the chairman, for the able manner in which he had trained the children.
On Friday last a meeting of the recently formed branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held in the Methodist Hall. Mrs Cook (the Auckland District President) and .Miss Dowar
» (Organising Treasurer) were present and addressed the meeting with a result that a substantial increase in the membership was recorded. The interesting initiatory service was read by Mrs Cook and Mrs Ashton . (president of the Branch) pinned on the badges. It was decided to hold future meetings on the last Tuesday in each month at 3 p.m. on the conelusion of the Red Cross meeting which begins at 2.30 p.m.
