DAIRY FACTORIES AWARD
The following is the result of the recent proceedings in connection with the dispute affecting workers engaged in cieameries and cheese factories, which we publish in response to several requests: The hours of labour were fixed as follows:
Butter factories: Prom August 15th to March 15th, 65 hours a week of seven days; March 16th to August 14th, 48 hours. Cheese factories: From August Ist to March 31st, 70 hours a week; from April Ist to May 31st, 60 hours ; from June Ist to July 31st, 40 hours.
Dried Milk factories : From September Ist to April 39th, 79 hours a week ; May and August. 60 hours ; June Ist to July 31st, 40 hours. Packing houses, where manufacturing is not done, 48 hours a week of six days.
The hours of work in creameries are to be arranged between the employers and their respective workers: The minimum wages fixed were as follows:
Butter factories and dried milk factories, where manager and 15 bands or over are employed : First assistant £4 8s a week; second, £4 ; third, £3 lis 6d; fourth £3 7s 6d; all others, £3 Os 6d. Where manager and KMo 14 hands are employed, the same rates are to apply, the fourth assistant being dropped. Where a manager and six to nine hands are employed, the wages fixed were: First assistant, £4 8s; second, £4; all others, £3 Os 6d. Where manager and three to five hands are employed: First assistant, £4 8s; all others, £3 Os 6d. Where rjoanager and one or two hands are employed, £3 Os 6d. Cheese factories: Where seven vats and over are in use, first assistant £4 8s a week, second £4, third £3 lis 6d, all others £3 Os 6d. Where four to six vats are in use, first assistant £4 4s, second £3 16s, all others £3 Os 6d. Two to three vats in use, first assistant £4, all others £3 Os 6d. The latter rate is also to be paid to general hands where only one vat is in use. Creameries, including bulking stations: Where the daily average supply during December does not exceed 1200 gallons, creameries are exempt from the award. In cases where the supply is over 1200 gallons, the manager shall be paid not less than £2 16s a week for the succeeding twelve months with fuel, milk, and suitable living accommodation. Where the number of suppliers exceed 50, an additional 8s per week shall be paid the manager; 75 suppliers, 6s a week; 100 suppliers, 9s. If a manager has to supply his own house, he shall be paid another 10s per week.
