PAPAKURA.
It is not generally known that swimming forms a part of the Papakura School curriculum but this is happily the case and scholars of both sexes in standards 4, 5 and 6 receive instruction, the girls at Young's Beach, where proper bathing facilities are being provided, and the boys at Chalky Point. It is the custom for classes to attend twn afternoons every second week when the tide is at high water and the Headmaster, Mr J. Elliot, who is a thorough sportsman, reports favourably on this new departure in the school's work The Master and teaching staff deserve every praise for such useful knowledge as swimming being imparted. For the post of assistant at the Papakura school no less than 26 applications were received. At a meeting of the Papakura Sports Committee, held on Febtuary 21st, it was agreed to hold the annual athletic sports meeting this year on Easter Monday. A committee consisting of Messrs E. 8. Cole, D. B. Stewart, W. Crichton and L. J. Mills was appointed to draw up the programme. At a meeting held on Monday, the 25th February last, the programme was submitted and agreed to. It was decided to reduce the amount to be offered for prizes and to curtail expenses as much as possible. The election of officers for the ensuing year then took place as follows : Patron, the St. Hon W. F. Massey, M.P.; vice-patron. Sir Fredk. Lang, M.P.; president, Mr E. S. Cole ; treasurer, Mr D. B. Stewart; secretary, Mr L. J. Miils. Messrs E. S. Cole and Elliot were appointed judges. As the dancing events which formed a prominent feature of the sports last year were regarded as popular items it was unanimously decided to again include those in the programme. It was announced that prizes had already been offered for certain events and there was every indication that the sports would be of an attractive nature. Mr Joe Ryan, the popular host of the Papakura Hotel, had donated the sum of 308 towards a prize to be contested for in a tug-of-war between the railwayiuen and local farmers. Mr W. Crichton had also donated a medal for the school boys' championship.
