WAIKATO RIVER BOARD At a meeting of the Waikato River Board, held at Mercer on Saturday last, there were present Messrs A. G. C. Glass .Chairman), J. T. Cronin, S. P. Pendegrast, and M. Gallery, with the Acting-Clerk, Mr F. J. Sturm. Mr Harold W. Matthews, member for Whangapae sub-division, forwarded an apology for non-attend-ance. C'.ERKSHI]An informal discussion on the appointment of Clerk occupied some time. Although an official appointment of a permanent nature was not made it was ultimately agreed that in the event of the Acting Clerk (Mr Sturm) not being appointed to the position permanently he should be specially remunerated for work done of a professional nature in connefc. tion with the accounts which might necessitate a journey to Auckland. The Chairman reported that in accordance with the authority granted to him at the last meeting he had made satisfactory arrangements for the hire of the "Mascotte" steamer by the United Timber Company.—The action of the Chairman was confirmed, MINISTER OF MARINE'S VISIT In connection with the promised visit to the district of the new Minister of Marine, the Rt. Hon. T. M. Wilford, it was agreed, on the motion of Mr Cronin, that the Board's Engineer (Mr C. D. Kennedy) should be asked to inspect the river and the work carried out by the Board and that the Clerk should communicate with the Secretary of the newly formed Navigation League advising him that Mr Kennedy hoped to accompany the party on the proposed visit to afford any information as to the Board's operations on the river and creeks.
On the motion of the Chairman it was also decided that Messrs Glass, Cronm, Gallery, and bhe Acting Clerk (Mr Sturm) should form a sub-committee to arrange all details in connection with the Minister's visit. GOVERNMENT ENGINEER'S VISIT The Board's Overseer (Mr P. Sellars) made an informal report on the recent visit of Mr J. B. Thompson, the Government Chief Drainage Engineer, who had inspected the Aka Aka groynes, the same being taken in committee.
At a meeting of the Mercer Patriotic League held last Thursday evening, over which Mr G. M. Morgon presided, it was decided to arrange a series of social gatherings during the season with the object of augmenting the funds of the League. A committee to carry such functions into effect was appointed consisting of Mesdames H. 8. Valedtine, Dunsmure, the Misses M. Morgan, M. Boose, R. Ragg and'E Harrison, Messrs C. Edwards, H. Bilderbeck, A. Dunsmure, J. Coleman and V. Selwood. A series of euchre tournaments will be held, the next being fixed for Friday the 22nd February, and it will take the form of a social and dance as a welcome home to Pte Pegnero and Corpl Crowhurst, two returned soldiers. It is anticipated that the gatherings will be well attended. At the end of the season substantial prizes will be awarded. Tho Mercer Town Board in connection with their improvement scheme are forming footpaths and water tables from the railway crossing to the school. Already the work carried out throughout the township is favourably commented upon.
