The Valuer General (Mr F. W. Flanagan), Wellington, in a letter to the Board wrote that he had been of opinion that up to four acres of the Children's Home was entitled to an exemption from rates but he had subsequently been advised by the Crown Land Office that the whole property was rateable. Under such circumstances he proposed to allow the existing roll entry to stand. The Chairman reported thai a copy of the communication had been sent to the Secretary of the Home, STATION BOAD FOOTPATHS. The Chairman siipessufl she opinion that the footpath* on Station Bead should be laid down with scoria and tarred and shingled aa such would improve the appearance from the station and would also be best for the traffic. Mr Burton supported the Chairman's views and it was resolved that the work should be carried out at an early date. GRKAT SOUTH BOAD. Mr Burton drew attention to the bad state of the footpath on the Great Bouth Boad between Hall and Alfriston Boads. He suggested that the same should be tarred and sanded for the benefit of pedestrians. It was decided to ask the Manukau County Counctl to repair the foot* path as suggested.
MABBET ROAD. • Mr Peeler asked that the total eoet of expenditure for work done on Massey Road should be supplied by the Clerk at the next meeting. JOIST BPKIAL LOAK. In connection with the joint special loan for the approach to the high level bridge, for which the County Council had declined to enter into negotiations! Mr Lupton expressed the opinion that the Council might be inclined to reconsider till* question. The Chairman thought that the Council had finally decided not to proceed further with the matter bat as he was anxious that negotiations should proceed he would be pleased to support Mr Lupton in further endeavours to secure the loan. Mr Lupton suggested that n deputation of the Board should again wait upon the Council and that some* of the Manurewa Eoad Board ratepayers (now County ratepayers) should also be asked to accompany the deputation- On his motion it was resolved that the question of the Joint Special Loan should be reopened and that a deputation from the Board and some ratepayers together with the Clerk should wait upon the Council with the object of securing the proposed loan on the petition of the ratepayers. Mr Fegler asked that the account of the expenditure incurred in respect of the proposed loan should' be sent to the petitioners. PUBLIC HALL. ,
In accordance with the Board's decision at the previous meeting to submit a loan proposal to the ratepayers for the purchase of the Public Hall, Mr Pegler enquired of the Chairman if it was proposed to hold the Board meetings there. The Chairman: That is a question for the future. Mr Pegler: In the interests of the ratepayers if the hall is taken over some information should be given aa to future intentions so as to avoid rent being paid as at present The Chairman remarked that any improvements to be made should be of a permanent nature and the present was not a proper time to bring forward such a scheme. DOQ TAX. It was resolved that the registratration fees for dogs should be the same as last year, namely, cattle dogs 2s 6d, other breeds 10s. iajpton's road. Mr Lupton submitted a plan of the proposed deviation of his property and the plan was approved. OVERDUE BATES, On the motion of the Chairman it was resolved that a penalty of tan per cent should be charged- on all rates unpaid by the 14th inst. MOTOR SPIED. Mr Burton drew attention to tile excessive speed of motors passing through Manurewa on the main South Road which was especially dangerous by reason of the fact that there were a number of children always proceeding to and from the Public School situated on the main road. In the interests of the public, he said, a speed limit should be decided on and on his motion it was resolved that a speed limit of 15 miles an hour should be fixed between McNaughton's boundary and Alfruton Road and that warning notices should be erected accordingly.
\ POSTAL FACILITIES. Attention was drawn by Mr Pegler to the inadequate local facilities provided by the Pjstal Department. He especially advocated that a delivery service should be established. Although land had been given for the erection of a post office, said Mr Pegler, no progress had been made by the Department towards the erection of a suitable building Mr Wood pointed out that owing to the Post Office being dosed on Saturday afternoons no telephonic communication could be made until the following Monday. He considered that some better provision should be afforded to meet the convenience of the public. The Chairman supported the views expressed by the previous speakers and considered that having regard to tile rapid growth of the district a Post Office should be erected at an early date. Qn the motion of Mr Pegler it was resolved that a deputation from the Board should wait upon the postal authorities in Auckland next week to urge that the suggested reforms should be carried out
ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £22 lis 9d were passed for payment An effort is being made to secure a better suburban train service to Papakura and since the Government have decided to reconsider the suburban train service generally there is a hope that the additional facilities will be provided. A movement is on foot for the 5.17 train from Auckland to run through from Papatoetoe with an additional night train leaving Auckland about 10 p.m. to suit students and business men. In view of the rapid growth of Manurewa it is hoped that these facilities will be provided. Mr G. T Cox. the purchaser of Martin's estate, has taken up residence in the district. He proposes to sub-divide a portion of the estate and to offer the same in lots to the public. The absence of metal is retarding the development of the Totara and Puriri Park Estates. The directors of those properties have recently paid a visit to the district and as a result of consultation with the local agent (Mr Enos Pegler) it is probable thatva scheme fur building on a number of the sections will be brought forward in the near future. From experience it has been found that investors are more inclined to buy land with a house erected than to purchase a section and build. An enjoyable picnic in connection with St link*'.* QJmrch and Sunday School was held on Monday the 28th January last on the estate of Mr H. Wood, Manurewa The newly appointed Vicar, the Rev P S. Smallfield, was pre ent and entered with zest into the day's proceedings. Various attractions, including racas, were provided for the children. During the afternoon occasion was taken to welcome the Rev P. S. Smallfield as Vicar of St Luke's, and that gentleman suitably replied. A special children's service will be held at St Luke's Church on Sunday afternoon next, when the distribution of prizes to the Sunday School scholars-will be made by the vicar.
