MERCER WAIKATO RIVER BOARD At a meeting of the newly-elccted members of the Waikato River Board, held at the Board's office, Mercer, on Saturday last, there were present Messrs A. G. C. Glass (chairman), J. T. Cronin, A. Lapwood, M. Gallery, S. Prendegrast, and H. W. Matthews. The acting Clerk (Mr F. J. Sturm) having declared the foregoing members duly elected at the recent election mentioned that as no one had been nominated for the Rangiriri sub-division there was still an extraordinary vacancy for that area and that it would be necessary to officially notify that nominations would be received and an election held in accordance with th 9 Local Elections and Polls Act 1908. It was accordingly resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, that the acting Clerk should take the necessary steps to advertise the vacancy and act as Returning Officer at such election CHAIRMAN AITOINTEII The acting Clerk (Mr F. J. Sturm) who presided then asked for Lomiuations of Chairman for the ensuing year. Mr Pendegrast proposed that Mr Glass should be appointed Chairman and this motion was carried unanimously. Mr Glass, in thanking the meeting for being re-elected chairman, said he would do his best but pointed out that it might be necessary for him to be absent and for that reason preferred that someone else would take the position. RESIGNATION OK CLEKK A letter was read from Mr A. L. Stevenson, Clerk to the Board, resigning his position owing to pressure of other work. On the motion of the Chairman tho resignation was accepted and thanks were accorded him for what hi had done. CLEKK The Chairman mentioned that as Mr Sturm had been acting clerk he would suggest that he should be appointed to that position. Mr Cronin expressed the opinion that the clerkship should be adver tised as he was not in favour of appointments being made except m open competition The meeting hav ing agreed to the position being ad vertised resolved that applications should be called for ttie vacant clerkship preference to be given to a returned soldier and pending the appointment of clerk Mr ftturra agreed to act as clerk pro tem. mauamap.ua cheek Mr A. TnE MASCOTTE STEAMER The Chairman reported that the United Timber Company had made application for.thehire of the steamer " Mascotte " for one or two years on terms which he considered satisfactory. They were also prepared to give a guarantee by the Back foi the payment of the reut Ho expressed the opinion that the}' should endeavour to let it to such a; ompany rather than to one trading in e •niju-ti-tion and in view of the financial position of the Board he was siiv.ngly in favour of granting the application on satisfactory conditions being entered into. Mr Lapwood regarded ihe letting of the steamer to the Cunipanv as a competitive company and was i;i favour of the boat being sold. The Clerk also submitted a statement of the Board's financial position and cheques in payment of accounts were passed. Nominations for the vacant representation of the Rangiriri subdivision on the Waikato Kiver Board will close at noon on Tuesday, February sth, and polling (if any) will take place on Monday, February lltli. A vacancy through the resignation of Mr G. Smith exists in the membership of the Mercer Town Board and nominations for the same will be received up to noon 6n Tuesday, February sth. In the event of a contest polling is fixed for Tuesday, February 12th.
