OTAHUHU.

Under the supervision of the headmaster (Mr Hall) and teachers about 40 senior girls attending the Otahuhu Public School were taken for a school picnic by motor bus to Kohimarama. Various attractions were provided and the picnic under ideal weather conditions was thoroughly enjoyable. The New Year can be celebrated in real Scotch fashion if the shortbread is obtained from Mr Gardiner, the Scotch baker, of Otahuhu. For the beet bread, cakes and fancy pastry he holds a high reputation. In this respect it is worthy of note to mention that Mr Gardiner secured the first prize among the trade for the best bread exhibited at the recent Auckland A. and P. show, the judge highly commending the quality of the bread shown. Shortbread and other goods by mail are despatched to the city,or country. At the meeting of the Otahuhu Schopl Committee held on Thursday, the 13th, there were pressent Messrs J. Hunter {chairman), I). Clarkson, Curry, F. Arnold, with the. Secretary (Mr G. Kemplay). The Schoolmaster's report on the year's work was presented and considered satisfactory and the large percentage of certificates for proficiency was regarded as encouraging. The Inspector's report was submitted which reflected favourably on the good work done by the scholars during the year, while the general behaviour and tone of the school was good. Letters forwarded by the Borough Council from the Prime Minister, the Minister of Education and Sir Fredk Lang were read relative to the complaint made on the overcrowded state of the school. After an informal discussion it was decided to thank the Council for tb.6 interest taken on behalf of the school, which the committee appreciated. The Borough Council are to be complimented on the improved state of the station road, which has been cleared of weeds and grass. It is to be hoped that this clearance will be further extended to the Great South road. It is hoped this suggestion will be carried out at an early date as this much frequented road from the railway station, if kept in good order, is likely to create} a favourable impression on visitors to Otahuhu.
