BLACKLEG REGULATIONS
A number of cases of breaches of the regulations under the Stock Act, 1908, for the prevention of blackleg among cattle, were dealt wtyh at the Auckland Police Court last Friday by Mr F. V. Frazer, B.M. The informations were laid in each case by the Stock Department, which was represented by Mr Selwyn Mays. Dalgety and Company iMr Durham) were charged with removing young cattle from the County of Franklin, an infected area, without a permit, Mr Mays stated that the company acted as agent for the Bale of a number of calves, and allowed the purchaser to take them into a non-infected district. The calves were reaching the age of immunity, but it was possible that blackleg mght break out among, them at any time.
Mr Durham said the Company knew nothing about the offence. Its agent denied that he told the purchaser that the regulations regard ing the cattle had been complied with. The Company was really in the position of a defendant owing to the neglect of one of its agents. A fine of £2O and costs £ll2s 6d was imposed. Thomas Hoult admitted that he had taken a number of young cattle from a farm at Runciman, in an in-' fected area, to another farm at Wellsted. Defendant said that he was not aware of the regulations, and had acted innocently, believing the cattle to be inoculated. Defendant was fined £8 and £1 8s costs. James E. Wilson (Mr Glaister) admitted selling two young calves from a farm at Fapakura. Mr Glaister said the calves were stunted, and had been sold for killing purposes. The defendant lived just on the border line of an infected district. A fine of £3 and costs £1 Is was imposed.
