METHODIBT CHURCH ANNIVERSARY The fifth anniversary of the Papatoetoe Methodist Church (the Church built in a day) was held on Sunday taut, all the services being well attended. Singing bv the choir under the conductorship of Mr Firth was very much appreciated, the rendering of "My Soul waiteth for the Lord " and "My God Reigneth " being sung with much feeling and good effect During the services the following solos were rendered "He wipes the tear from every eye" by Mrs Martin and " The Lord is my Shepherd" by Miss Nobes, the last named and Mr Firth taking the duet " When I survey the wondrous Croee." The services were conducted by Rev J. F. Martin, of Pukekohe. The collections for the day were in aid of the Trust fund. PAPATOETOE BOWLING CLUB A most interesting pairs match for the Hall shields was played on Saturday last, F. Wills and W. Cut forth opposing J. Smytheman and W. Knight. On the 21st head the soorea stood 17 all and an extra head waa necessitated. When the leads had finished Smytheman held the shot Cutforth, the opposing skip, next drew the shot with his last bowl but Knight cut him out with a fast running bowl and won by one point 18-17. Other results were: Hunter, Gane, Gladding and Spencer 19 lost to Timewell, Galloway, Rawnsley and Reid 21; Bryett, Jenkins and Andrew 16 loßt to Daisley, Leonard and Colee 22. In a match played this week, Carlton: Rowles,Francis, Thompson, Baildon 22, beat Papatoetoe : Hall, Knight, Watson, Spencer 16. The new Public Hall is now shaping towards completion and the Road Board are in hopes of opening it about the end of January. The Picture proprietors, Messrs Cobine and Co., have installed their engine and all the plant is on the spot ready to commence as soon as the hall is completed. Advertisements re the picturea will appear weekly in the "Times," together with a description of the leading picture to be screened at each performance. It ia anticipated that the newly formed Scouts' Brass Band will be in readiness to play selections at the opening ceremony of the hall. The boys are making rapid strides towards efficiency and it will not be long before they make their first public appearance. .A proposal is on foot for the band to go into camp for a week or ten days during the Xmas holidays. A church parade of Boy Scouts will be held at St John's next Sunday morning at 11 am. Arrangements are now complete for the Scout Concert on Monday evening next. The Ponsonby Band will parade at Docherty's corner at 7 p.m and march to the railway station and back to the hall playing selections en route. A first-class programme has been arranged and tickets have been going off well and everything points to a bumper house.
The Red Cross shop in Shortland street, Auckland, was under the control of the Papatoetoe Ladies' Patriotic Committee on November 23 and 24 and the takings for the two days excelled that of the previous venture the sum of £52 6s 4Jd being realised A thorough canvas of the district was made on this occasion for produce and sundry goods, practically every household being asked to contribute. The result was a firstclass assortment and a full shop The ladies are to be congratulated on their fine effort. Several raffles took place and the following sums were realised : Turkey (given by Mr W. McLauchlin) £3 ; ham (given by Mrs Wallace) £2 13s; Xmas cake (given by Mrs A. Muir) £1 14s; and oamisole (given by Miss Sutton) £1 Us.
