ADVANCE OTAHUHU | To the Editor] Sir, The Otahuhu Borough Council has taken legal advice and has discovered that it is under no tegal obligation to form even its own roads—Hoo-bally-ray. Presumably it is under no obligation to maintain them or keep them free from mud. And who will deny that they keep to Che very letter of the law? But why not get more legal advice and find out if it would not be advisable to put a barbed wire fence round the town—a high one would not be necessary—and keep the public out altogether? It would greatly decrease the cost of maintaining roads and perhaps the rates could be reduced to nil. At one meeting of this up-to-date Council it was decided to ask a horrid, -progressive grocer to pay for the metalling of one street because he was using it too much. That is a sound businesslike proposal. The Otahuhu ratepayers have reason to be proud of the way their funds are guarded. But there has not been much change in the last forty years, has there ? Yours etc., ECCLESTON, of Tooley street. ROLL OF HONOUR. THE LATE PTE W. J. RAU. News has just been received of the death of Private W. J Rau, youngest son of Mr C. A. Rau, late of Papakura at<d Thames and now of Opotiki. Private Rau was educated at the Papakura School and also at Auckland Grammar School. After leaving school he entered the Post Office in Papakura and later was transferred on promotion to Hikurangi. Owing to office work not agreeing with his health he resigned his position in the Postal Depaitment and engaged in farming on the Hauraki Plains, from where he enlisted some two years ngo and left with the 3rd Battalion N Z R.B. He was wounded in France in October of last year and was in hospital in England but returned to the fighting line in January of this year. He was reported missing after the raid the New Zealanders made on the German trenches on 21st February and was later on reported a prisoner of war. Nothing more was heard of him until his death on August 31st was reported from Germany a few days ago. He was 21 years of age.

On Thursday of next week an interesting exhibition is to be held at the Otahuhu public school, of the work done during the past year by the pupils of the Otahuhu Technical Classes. Parents will have a good opportunity to see for themselves what can be executed by the children in the way of woodwork, cookery, etc , under proper supervision, and all interested should take the chance afforded to inspect the exhibits. Last Wednesday evening the •members of the Girls' Friendly and Physical Culture Clubs held a combined closing social in the Parish Hall. The programme consisted of games, competitions and dancing, with vocal solos by Miss Bertha Harnett, Master Jack Fraser, Mr Rouse and Miss Alice McArthur and a violin solo by Mr Rouse. Pii/es for the competitions were won by Misses M. Muir and Puckridge and tlie Mayor (Mr A, McDonald). After supper the ladies of the Physical Culture Class presented Miss Pilkington with a silver vase as a token of appreciation of her services as pianist during the past year Miss Pilkington replied in a few wellchosen words, saying it had always been a pleasure to her to lie associated with such a gf-mal class. It was intended to present Miss Morrin with a silver candlestick, but as she was unfortunately absent Mr Vincent Morrin received it on Behalf of Iph sister. On the conclusion of supper dancing was indulged in until mid night. Upon singing the National Anthem cheers were given for the chairman (Mr Wildmau) and also for Mrs Fraser, who acted as pianist for the evening. The social altogether nroved most successful and the piocceds are to bd given to the Bod Cross Fund.

The Otahuhu Bowling Club have handed over to the local Patriotic Committee the sum of £l9, the proceeds from the social recently held by the Club.
