PAPATOETOE

PAPATOETOE BOWLING CLUB A most enjoyable afternoon was spent on the local green on Thursday when the bowlers and residents of the district entertained about forty returned wounded soldiers from the military hospital. Motor cars were supplied by members of Carlton, Ponsonby, Remuera and various other city and suburban bowling clubs. These tours for wounded soldiers are arranged by Mr F. Clarke, of Remuera. During the afternoon those of "the boys," who were able, joined in games of bowls and croquet. Afternoon tea was partaken of anil proceedings concluded with cheers for the returned "boys" and for those at the front. Before leaving for Auckland Mr F. Clarke thanked the Papatoetoe bowlers and residents for their hospitality, stating that they had thoroughly enjoyed their outing Mr A. Hall, President of the club, in reply, conveyed the thanks of the local residents to Mr Clarko for the privilege given them of meeting the returned soldiers and expressed the wish that in the near future they would again have the pleasure of throwing the green open to the heroes who had done such great deeds in the Empire's cause A match for the Clow Ferns was played on Saturday last and resulted in a win for the challengers. With a very keey green and a strong cross wind the pace was very hard to pick and the bowling was not up to a very high standard. The scores were Holders : Bryett, Knight, Watson, Daisley, 8 ; Challengers: Dilworth, Bryant, Wilson, Spencer 28. Other matches played on Saturday resulted as follows : Clow, Timewell and Trimble 34, beat Wilson, Gane and Culforth 17; A. Swaftield, Ernest, Wills and Coles 28, beat Farnsworth, J. Wyllie, Galloway andßeidlS; Hunter, Western and Gladding 15, lost to Swaffield, Leonard and Rawnsley 23; Beaney, Hall and Bradstreet 20, beat Smithyman, Death and Jenkins 19. PAPATOETOE ROAD BOARD At the last monthly meeting of Papatoetoe Road Board the following were present, viz., Messrs E. Niccol ''chairman), Wyllie, Woolfield, and Timewell, with the Clerk (Mr Ernest). VOTES OF SYMPATHY The Chairman movtd that a record be made of the Board's profound sympathy with the parents of the late Privates Ward and Galloway w!">o had laid down their lives for their country on the battlefields of Flanders. The motion was carriei in silence, the members standing. STORM WATER TROUIiLE Miss Collick attended and asked the Board to contribute half the cost of laying pipes through her land to take storm water from Rangatoto and Coronation roads. It was decided to request tho Board's Engineer to be present at a special meeting to be held on the ground, the Clerk to arrange the date. METAL PIT The Chairman leported that he had waited on the Manukau County Council with a view to the Council combining with the Board in the purchase of a metal pit. The Council appointed the then Chairman and Mr Bryant to view the pit but nothing further had been dune. The Chairman spoke as to the excellent quality of the blue metal dow being quarried. The Board left the matter of the purchase of the pit in the hands of Messrs Niccol aud Wyllie with power to act. HALL ( UAIUS An ofl'erof 400 bent wood chairs hav ingbeeu received from Messrs Tonson Garlick it was reported that an inspection of them had been made by the Chairman and Mr Wyllie and it was considered that the Board could not do bettor than purchase the same. The matter was left in the hands of tho Chairman and Mi J. W'yllie. MISCELLANEOUS Mr Ward, tho surfaceman, reported that about 200 yards of spawls were n ady for crushing.—The Clerk was requested to arrange with tho Manukuu County Council for the use of their crusher, the Council to take metal in payment.
