AROUND BUCKLAND AND PUKEKOHE EAST

(By our Travelling Reporter) A most pleasantly situated farm with a particularly good approach road and well clipped hedge is that belonging to Mr fl. Bullock on the Buckland-Bombay road. Therms a charm about the place which the brilliantly flowered rhododendron shrub—standing close to the homestead—serves to impart as well as giving to the red-roofed house a delightful setting. Not infrequently a little forethought in the planting of a flowering shrub adds to the beauty of the surroundings and makes the place more attractive. Close by the road on this farm is a good crop of potatoes, which has a healthy appearance, and should later on give a good yield. Like most other farms in the Pukekohe-Buckiand district the favourite seeds here are the "Gamekeeper" and "Northern Star " and, generally speaking, these varieties produce the best results, although in the Pukekohe East district " Maori Chief" appears to claim the premier position as the best allround potato. Mr Bullock's holding comprises 55 acres and the cows are mainly of Jersey cross, all of his 21 animals being of good milk-produc-ing type. Id addition Mr Bullock keeps three horses and about 20 pigs. Altogether, while there is nothing special about the holding there is every indication that the owner pays attention to the details of the farm and sees that the weeds are not only well controlled but that the hedges and culverts are not neglected. Around Buckland—especially in in the district under review—are to be seen some of the finest Bhorthorn —not pedigree—cows in the Waikato, and although the Jersey, both pure and grade, has its many devotees the big framed deep udders of the Shorthorn animals to be found in the Buckland-Bombay area are a credit to any farmer. On the main Pukekohe East road are some good potato crops, and althrough potatoes are not grown in such quantities as on ,l the Hill," Mr R. Bradbury has about four acres of the " Gamekeeper " variety of a decidedly promising yield.
