DROWNING ACCIDENT AT MERCER.

A sad drowning accident occurred this (Friday morning on the Waikato River near Mercer. The Waikato Shipping Company's launch "Sylvia" duly loft Mercer for Churchill and Glen Murray and had proceeded up the river as far as Sweeney's Island when from some cause, noi yet explained, it lurched over and then regained its /proper position, The sudden roll of the boat caused a passenger and a couple of the Siiipping Company's employees to be precipitated into the water but whilst the latter two men managed to keep alloat and were rescued tho former was carried away by the current and was drowned, His name is given as a Mr Gardener, who had recently sold out of his farm at Glen Murray. The body has not yet been recovered.
