COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTION.

Crs J. Flanagan and, J. Henry (candidates for re-election for the Drurv and Mauku Ridings respectively', held a very successful joint mooting in the Public Hall at Drury last Saturday night. Mr Flanagan, speaking as the Chairman of the (Jhuncil as well as the candidate for Drurv Riding, dealt with various matters in a very able and lucid manner, his address being on the lines of his previous speeches alr< ady reported. Mr llem-y followed and referred to various matters of interest to the - Mauku Riding, fully explaining his action with regard to the financial matters as between the Mauku and Karaka ends of the Riding He gave a full statement of receipts and expenditure of alimonies raised over » the Karaka area during his term of office and the figures showed that with the works put in hand and to which the Council was now committed, the overdraft to be taken over and the £SOO odd already paid to relieve the ratepayers of a special rate to meet the utilisation of loan money irregularly spent in the purchase of a quarry and equipment, the Karaka end of the district on the Road Board merging would be overdrawn beyond the amount collected and obtained from all sources in the Karaka to'the extent of nearly £IOOC. The meeting was a very orderly and attentive one, Mr Glasson, of Drury, presiding. At the conclusion Messrs Flanagan and Henry were accorded a hearty vote of thanks for their adresses and a motion expressing the opinion that they were in their respective ridings the most suitable candidates to represent the ratepayers was carried by acclamation.

A correspondent writes : " In an addre?9 at the Patumahoe Hall on Saturday evening in support of Mr Montgomerie's candidature for the Mauku Riding, Mr J. Batty (the manager of the Karaka Land Company) reminded his hearers that three years ago. the time of the last election, he offered the ratepayers a very good man (meaning himself) and they had seen fit to turn him down, but on this occasion he was offering them the very best man he could produce in the person of Mr Montgomerie." May I point out that Mr Batty omitted to state that Mr Montgomerie is a resident of Mangere and is the owner of a section in the Karaka District which he purchased from the Karaka Land Company. Mr J. S. Montgomerie, candidate for the Mauku riding, addressed meetings at Patumahoe last Saturday and at Waiau Pa last night, being given a good hearing on occasion.
