PADDY'S FAIR AT PUKEKOHE

Under the auspices of the Pukekohe Women's Patriotic League a Paddy's Market was held in the Premier Hall on Thursday and Friday last. Mr C. K. Lawrie, in the unavoidable absence of the Mayor, formally opened the proceedings and in doing so wished the function a financial success. The hall, which was prettily decorated, presented an anianimated appearance and the stalls overladen with tempting wares gave an indication of the energies devoted by the ladies to promote the success of the undertaking. The various stallholders and lady stewards were : —Candy and sweet stall: Mrs McArtliur, Mrs Grigor, Misses Bilkey and I Brown ; cake stall: Mrs Hart, Misses W. E. Webster and N. Stuart; produce stall, Mrs Mcßae, Mrs Jones and Miss Lulu O'Connor ; sewing stall, Miss Usher, Mrs Turner and Miss Fausett; biddy's kitchen, Mesdames Barter, Kirkman and Miss Wake; mystery depot, Mrs Stuart; nature's garden, Mrs Mee and Miss Koose; parceling department, Miss Goldsworthy; competitions and science, Miss Graham and Miss Kennelly assisted by other volunteers; tea rooms, Mesdames Hooey, Crum and Thornell, Miss 6 F. Moore and Galloway; entertainment, Mrs Webb, Misses Webster and O'Connor.

A brisk sale was done, the sewing and lolly stalls being particularly well patronised during the afternoon and evening. It should be mentioned that the girl pupils of the High School and of Standards V and VI of the Public School kindly assisted in the making of the lollies that were sold.

Much interest was centered in the baby show and the awards made by the judges (Mesdames H. E. Outred and F. J. Taylor) of Tuakau were: Baby (boy or girl) under one year, Elva Heath 1, Bertie Atchison 2; under 2 years, Kathleen O'Con nor 1, Camb Pooley 2. The awards for competitions were: Fancy dress (between 10 and 16 years) Alicia Cave 1, Minnie Berriman and Lilas Cave (equal) 2. Fancy dress (over 16), Miss Hewlett (Union Jack) 1, Miss Oldham (France) 2. Other competitors in order were: Miss Olive Jenkin (Spain), Miss Curly (Italy), and Mi&s Hawke (Ireland) equal. Hat trimming (gentlemen) J. Wilson 1, E. E. Wright 2. Nail driving (ladies), Mrs McArthur 1, MissE. Maxwell 2. Competition (prize for best article made of material costing not less than Is), Miss N. Stewart 1, Mrs Baxter 2.

An excellent programme of vocal and instrumental music was provided which was much appreciated and the services rendered by one and all in this direction served to add additional interest to the proceedings. For girl skipping there were seven entries the winners being E. Clews 283 skips Bertha Perkins 273, Alicia Cave 268, Muriel Lysnar 262, Alice Berriman 251, Margaret Martin 253. Skipping for boys secured five entries, the winners being H. Butcher 1, J. Hogan 2. Hat trimming (men) Capt. Elford 1, E. Curnow and L. Henrick (erjual) 2.

The winners in'the various competitions were round table (correct number 396) Miss Joyce McNally 399; dog (correct number 251) Gordon Flavell 250 ; winkers (correct number 527), Mr A. Kiddie 524 ; cosy (correct number 396) Mr A. B. Barter 399 ; soldier's kit (correct weight 43lbs) Mr H. Stuart 43-Jlbs. After the competitions much amusement was created when the various goods were auctioned on Friday evening. This duty was carried out bv Mr J. T. Stembiidge, Mr F. Brown proving a capable assistant in addition to several volunteers who found not a little fun in assisting to dispose of the varied wares. Altogether the two days function was a great success. The ladies associated with the Patriotic League devoted a good deal of time to successfully promote the object to secure more funds and it is pleasing to learn that the response was so encouraging. Mrs J. M. Baxter as usual worked most untiringly as lion sec.

While the final figures are not yet available it is confidently anticipated that the result will be an additional £l2O to the funds which serves to stimulate all to further effort for the good of " our boys."
