PAPATOETOE

On Tuesday evening last a Baud of Hope Concert was held in St John's Hall when there was a very large gathering. The Rev C. Porter presided. The programme consisting of descriptive and action songs with dialogues by the children. Many of the items received encores and great credit is due to the ladies who organised the entertainment. During the evening Adjt. Simpson, Salvation Army Officer, of Otahuhu, addressed the gathering on Temperance work and related many instances of the social side of his organisation's work in connection with the war. The girls of the Papatoetoe Gymnasium Class are to give a Physical Culture display next Wednesday evening in aid of Red Cross funds. Matters in conneotion with the Boy Scout's Band are forging ahead and a good sum has been collected for the purchase of the instruments. It is expected when the lists are completed that it will be possible to purchase 22 instruments, thereby constituting a full brass band. There are a large number of second-hand instruments under offer and the Committee hope to acquire the required number next week. Tt is hoped that the boys will meet for their first instruction in a fortnight's time.
