| RAILWAY LEAGUE MEETING ' | The annual meeting of the Mauku ! Branch of the Wahku Railway • League was held in the Patutnahoo ! Hall last Friday evening when there I was a good attendance of members, iMr .7. ITonry, President of the i Branch, presided. ■ | The annual report and balance ! sheet was read by the Secretary and ' Treasurer (Mr W. Finhvy). I Tho balance, sheet showed a credit. i of £lO 7s .'id, which was considered I satisfactory. This amount with the i incoming subscriptions will enable the League to pursue a vigorous policy during the coming year in endeavouring to speed up the construction and equipment of the lino. j The report dealt principally with the construction works during the year, and the handling of the goods trallic by the Public Works from the main line to Patumahoe station, also the necessity of appointing a porter to supervise the goods trallic at Patumahoe and Mauku stations in a fortnight's time when the Railway ! Department will take over the section to Patumahoe. In dealing with the construction works the report called members' attention to the necessity of using all available means of urging the Govj ernment to push on the work, so that ! tho people may reap the advantage
of the money already expended and the expenditure may 1)0 producing a return. As these beneiits can only Ito fully attained when the line is J finished through to Waiuku it was j suggested that the Waiuku and ] GHenbrook branches should be asked i to take concerted action with the i Mauku branch in the matter, j The report also dealt with the j resignation of the League's secretaiy ami treasurer, Mr W. Finlay, wlio ! is going intfi camp in the course of a '■ few weeks. Mr Finlay has acted as secretary and treasurer since the in- ' cepticn of the League some ten i years ago, and the Committee re j grettod the loss of his services which | under the circumstances was unavoidable. - The members decided to present Mr Finlay with a suit- ; -(lily inscribed souvenir as a mark of
i appreciation lor his long rendered and gratuitous services. On (lie motion of Mr M. Crispe, ! seconded by Mr \V. Johns, Mr J. j Ui-nrv was unanimously elected President lor the ensuing year with I Messrs Jtdins and Soiumerville as | u(v Presidents. Mr M. Crispe was : appointed Secretary and Treasurer mid the following as Committee, i Messrs Lull, Crispe, Finlay, Cut- ' liiLl, Knvan igh, Taylor, Learning, j Cuthrie, l'leydell and Coldswoithy. ' Considerable discussion took place ! mi the dilTevont matters dealt with in I the report, it being unanimously de- ; (iiled ih.it it should bean instruction I to ilu- ingoing committee to support | the various matters rocoiiimnnded in i the report. The meeting nUo approved of the j suggestion that lie'opening id the j railway to Pattnnnlion and Mauku ! should he celebrated by a suitable i demonstration, arrangements being I I,.tf in the hands of the Committee.
