PATRIOTIC CONCERT
Successful Gatnering There was a large and appreciative audience present at the concert held in tlio Premier Hall, Pukekohe, last Tuesday evening in aid of the Red Cross Fand and as organiser of the gathering Mr A. B. Barter L Deputy Mayor) is to be complimented on the able arrangements made and the successful results secured. The pupils from the Public and Convent schools took a prominent part in the programme and they carried out their respective items faultlessly. The proceeds opened with the singing of the National Anthem and Miss Webb next effectively played a pianoforte solo. Mr Jack Brown followed and delighted all by his singing l< The Grey of the Sky," earning a recall. The Convent school boys then gave " The Anzac's Song " admirably and gained an encore. Mr Alan Brown was encored for " There's a Land " and responded with "Zummerset." Mr W. Guthrie pleasantly sang " A Perfect Day '' and responded with " Somewhere a Voice is Calling " "The Sandman" was a pretty night time scene in which the Public school children figured, Miss Grace Lvsnar acting as '* Sandman" and Miss Myrtle Blako carrying out the duties of Nurse. The singing of the children in the action song combined with their neat dresses had a pleasing effect. "At Dawning" was pleasingly sang as a solo by Miss Mabel Clarice, who was encored. "Rocked in the Cradlo of the Deep" as a quartet was effectively rendered by Messrs J. RouUton, G. Blake, A. Young and W. T. Jones and they had to respond, their singing being much appreciated. M; NornnnTtito gave a clever conjuring entertainment and on behalf of the Red Cross Fund collected i'l 17s 'id. After the interval Mr C, F. Bickford . Honorary Financial Organiser of the Rod Cross League) gave an interesting talk on the work of the KVd Cross in all parts of the world and convinced his audienco that the work was a noble or.e on behalf of the sick and wounded soldiers. Mr I .like Wilson then sang as a solo " Till the Sounds of the Desert (jrow Cold " and was well received. Mr A. Graham gave a violin solo with marked ability and was encored. A vit lin duet by Miss Rogers and Mrs <i. 11. Armstrong was well executed and received great applause. At this stage medals and prizes won by the Pukekohe Hockey Club was distributed by Mr Barter. The trophy won by the local club was handed to Mr Jack Brown , captain of the hockey club, and he suitably returned thanks.

It sli' uld he mentioned that the throe hockey sticks won a.° pri/es donated them to the ReJ Cross Fund were returned by the recipients and these weie auctioned for the benefit of the fund during the evening.
