TUHIMATA.
RED CROSS EVENING, A verj - successful Rod Cross evening was given in the ''Barn" on Friday lust, the following ladies having organised and provided for the gathering, viz., Mes lames F. Ballard, Dufty, Biddick, Langford, and Newcombe, and Misses Langford, Biddick, Ballard, and Johnston. Mr I ,ang!'ord, in an appropriate speech, opened the function and after the singing of tho National Anthem called on Mrs Hudson Williamson (organiser of Red Cross Teas for tho Victoria League) to give an address. In a very earnest and forcible discourse Mrs Williamson brought home to all present the very pressing need there was for help to be extended to our boys and explained how the League worked, what it had done and was still doing. She expressed hnr gratitude for the assistance they had receiued from Tuhiinata and Kama Kama.
The Barn, which was festooned with Hags, greenety and arum lilies, presented a very pretty appearance, a bounteously laden stall in one corner, hung with red, white and bluo, adding to the general effect. The stall was presided over by Mesdames Dufty and Ballard and Miss Longford, who, judging by the rapid disappearance of produce, sweets, etc., did good business. A musical programme was provided in the early part of the evening, those contributing items being Pianoforte solo by Miss Emily Biddick ; vocal trio by Misses Vera Newcombe, Annie Dufty, and Olive Ballard ; violin solo, "The Holy City," by Mr Kreft Trimmer; song by Willie Hughes; pianoforte duet by Misses Lala Sharp and Vera Newcombe; song (humorous) by Mr Ralph Trimmer ; violin duet by Mrs Sloan and Mr Harold Hunter; song by Eva Crooks; song by Mrs Sloan ; pianoforte duet by Misses 0. Ballard and Vera Newcombe; and song by Mr Ralph Trimmer. Tho accompaniments were played by Mrs Trimmer, Misses Ballard, Crooks, Oldham and Langhan.
Several competitions wero in progress during the proceedings, the winners being: Hand painted cushions, Harold Hunter; lamp, Mrs Langford; ham, Mr Fox ; tea cosy, Harold Hunter ; cushion, Mrs Oldham; fancy box, Willie Hughes; and table centra, Mr F. Ballard.
Much interest was centred in a waltzing competition for which there were a number of entrants although only 1;; couplos of tho number fa<ed tho judge, Mr W. Tooman, who was assisted by Mr Dufty. The couples were soon reduced to three, the pii/e winners eventually proving to bo Miss Hill and Mr 11. Tooman. Mrs F. 1.. Wright, of "Ravonthorpe," kindly provided excellent music for tho dances during the evening, extras being played by Mrs Trimmer and Mrs Sloan. A sumptuous supper was handed round by the hestosses and thoir holpers, after which tho dancing was continued till the small hours of tho morning Thoso who worked so well for tho success of tho evening wero amply repaid by tho result, tho sum of £23 6s Id being obtained.
