A clearing sale is to be held by Messrs Alfred Buckland and Sons on Mr A. T. Anderson's farm at Mauku on Thursday next. Particulars will be found in an advt. in this issue. Particulars in connection with the special roll of ratepayers for a loan of £370 by the Franklin County Council for that authority's share of the cost of constructing the Hingaia and Whangamaire bridges, Karaka, are advertised in this issue. The triennial County Ooueil elections are due to take plate On Wednesday, November 14th next, in conjunction with the Harbour Board Elections. In place of one representative for Franklin and Manukau Counties combined each County has under the new scheme of representation been given a member. Mr J 6. Rutherford, at present repnsents Fruuklin urd Ma iukau on the Board.

A Red Cross Concert, promoted by tlio Pukekohe Patriotic Committee in conjunction with the Franklin Hockey Association, is to bo given in the Premier Hall next Tuesday evening. Mr A. B. Barter is acting as organiser and has arranged a most attractive programme, whilit an addres', detailing Red Cross work, will bo delivered by Mr C. F. Bickford, of the Auckland Executive. It is hoped that with such a worthy cause to be supported there will be a large and representative assembly.

A number of friends associated with the Franklin A. and P. Association and the Pukekohe Bowling Club met at the Pukekohe Bowling Green pavilion last Tuesday evening to make a presentation to Mr C. K Lawrie late President of the A. and P. Association). Mr Frank Perkins (President of the Bowling Club), in a humorous speech, referred to the good qualities of their guest and asked him to accept from his many friends a bassinette, he Mr L iwrie* having recently become the proud possessor of twins. The acetylene lamps that have hitherto done duty in the streets of Pukekohe have now been removed preparatory to electric light standards taking their places. In the report in our last issue descriptive of Messrs Gallagher, Howe and Moore's motor garage at Pukekohe Mr W. E. Webb was in error referred to as the firm s manager. The management, however, is solely in the hands of Mr 8. 11. Gallagher, one of the principals of the tirm, Mr Webb being the travelling representative, The death occurred on Saturday last at Thames of Mr John HilJman, who formerly resided in Pukekohe for many years He had attained the ripe age of 81 years and eleven months and was the uncle of Mrs A. E. Wilkinson, of Pukekohe. As an advt. of their local agency for the electrical firm of Turnbull and Jones Ltd , Messrs Gallagher, Howe and Moore have illuminated their establishment in Pukekohe with electric light, temporary power being supplied by an oil engine j workiug on the premises

Mr Roy Schofield, of Pukekohe, has accepted a business appointment at Fiji and will take up his new duties next month. Mr Schofield, it will be remembered, was present as a member of the Main Expeditionary Force at the landing at Gallipoli and returned to the Dominion invalided about a year ago. A small coterie of men, who by audible remarks were making their presence at a concert held in Pukekohe last Tuesday undesirable, obeyed a request made to them by Constable Miller to leave the building Outside the hall, however, one of their number, a visitor to the town, became agressive and prc§ ceeded to strike the Constable. For this he was arrested and at a J.P.|s Court the following morning his assault on the representative of law and order involved him in a fine of £2.
