ROAU XEAIi l'UMl'l.V'i STATION Messrs E. Mahony .\ Son wrote complaining of the bad state of the road running from Manakau road towards the pumping station. As one of the trustees of the estate of David Dalton it was pointed out that the estate consisted almost entirely of land bounded on the north by the road referred to on which there were houses, the income from which was much needed to maintain the widow and for that reason a strong appeal was made to the Council to have the road improved They further pointed out that in addition to the loss of tenants in consequence of such unsatisfactory state of the road, the condition of the road was alleged to he due to the wear and tear caused by the Council's own carts. They asked that something should bo done immediately to make a proper approach, otherwise the only course they submitted would be to withhold payment of rates.
Cr Barter said that the matter had already been under the consideration of the Council but it had been absolutely impossible to do anything during the bad weather.
Cr Paterson mentioned that when the fence abutting on the road was shifted to its proper line the Council would probably be prepared to do the work and it was accordingly resolved to reply to Messrs Mahony iV Son to that effect.

Cr Patterson sta+ed a largo number of residents were enquiring up to what hour at night tho electric light would Vie available. Cr Barter replied that it would probably be till midnight until later hours appeared necessary but as such late service would entail extra hands the question would have to be fully considered. Cr Barter then drew attention to the fact that provision had only been made for house lighting in Queen street and not for street lights, He suggested that street lights should bo provided there. Cr Stembridge concurred and on his motion it was resolved that two lights should be provided in Queen street.
NELSON STREET A petition from Messrs W. H. Pratt, J. McKinney and L. Johnson was received asking that a footpath should be formed in Nelson street. They also complained that the telepkone post was out of lino and in a dangerous position and should he removed. Cr Barter mentioned that an improvement to the road had been sanctioned and would bo carried out as soon as possible. As to the telephone post it was decided to communicate with the Telegraph Department to ask them to havo the polo removed to the proper line. HUMMING HEDGES Cr Patterson mentionod that many hedges in the Borough required cutting and it was resolved that all owners of property should bo notified to have their hedges cut.

Some discussion arose over a recommendation of the Works Committee for scoria to be laid on the sido of tho road on Uueen street from King street corner to Messrs Perkins & Go's bakery, half cost to be bom by Messrs Perkins. Cr Stembridge urged that the money could be better spent in other places where people had to suffer many inconveniences. Cr Morrow shared tho same view and said some roads wore absolutely disgraceful.
Cr Barter pointed out tlmt Messrs Perkins were paying double the rates since their new building had been erected.
Cr Armstrong urged that it was a public benefit and not a private one —a fact that should not he overlooked. On the recommendation that the work should be done being put to the meeting it was tarried, Crs Stembridge and Morrow dissenting, MOTOIi I Alt OnSTIiIVTIOXS Cr Stembridgc drew attention to the obstruction by a number of motor cars standing in King street. Cars, he said, wore repaired in the street instead of inside a garage. Others were left without lights at night and were a danger to the public. Ho suggested that a taxi stand should be provided.
Cr Patterson also concurred and it was resolved that the attention of the police should bo drawn to such obstruction and that provision should bo made in the By-laws to deal with the matter. i;EKl;lMA.\'s AVEXUK Cr Daysh drew attention to the uncompleted state of the road leading t'j his property and asked that Mr Berriman, who undertook to form the road, should bo rerjuostod to do so.
