"THE DAY."
We were cruising near the bank That lies off the Dutch coast's flank, Six light cruisers, and destroyers half a score, When, just as morning broke We saw miles and miles of smoke, And we knew the German Fleet was out once more. Then our Admiral says, says he, "Let us draw them out to sea Till our heavy ship* can get down from their base" ; So we turned and slipped along With our engines going strong, But a few spare knots in case we hal to race. And the enemy gave chase
For the noble German race Is very fond of fighting ten to one. But we'd got the skunks on toast As we lured them near our coast, And we knew we'd have no end of blooming fun. Then the winds began to blow, And the storm raged high and low, Aud the tempest through our rigging whistled shrill; And we shouted, loud and gay "How d'you lubbers like 'The Day' " While the waves ran high as Pukekohe Hill.
Then our Admiral gave a wink And says— "Really boys, I think That is Beatty coming down athwart our way So we'd better have a shot Before he nabs the lot," And he hallo's down the engineluuui —' jUtila^." So we turn i and gave 'em hell And a hail of shot and shell In our salvoes o'er the stormy wuvt'B did flj ; But much t) our surprise Not a single gun repli -e, So we steered our course right in t > find out why. Half the Huns weak and pale Dangled limply o'er the rail As the bmkun water came nboard in
bloOs, Y/ithold Tirpitz with his face iu An en-iiiie led cabin ba-in, And the rest of them so many seasick swabs. So now Willyuoi the h[iiser Is a sadder and <1 wiser Chap than ever he expected for to be ; For now liis fleet has gone He has nought to count upon, S j he's up and joined the Peace Societee. —PETER SIMPLE.
