Wake Up, Clevedon.

| To the Editor ; Sir,—ln your issue of July 27th, appears a letter by Mr S A. Browne, which is calculated to mislead. Tin purpose of Mr Browne's remarks appear to be directed in an effort to procure honor for himself. I would point out, however, that the sort of criticism directed at the members of the Road Board by one or two of your contributors is not calculated to do much honor to anybody. I am much surprised to read that Mr Browne credits me with being one of a number who assembled with the bloodthirsty intention of dismembering him. I make has'.e to say that I attended that meeting no: as an antagonist in any of the word. I have always used ray small influence in the direction of the acquisition of Xhorpe's property for the purpose for which it is now used.

With regard to the alleged mishandling by previous Koil Boards I have nothing to do. The present Board found the matter to bo without di(li;>iiti'..s. This may hive been duo to Mr Browne's past efforts.

The asseition that the Boards cut very " small potatoes " I accapt for what it is worth, the assumption being that Mr Sam A. Browne is the " big potato." Tho only honor I can see in the business is due to the late Mr Hampton Thorp for making a present of at least half the value of tho property to tne district. Th inking you iu anticipation.—l am, etc , JOHN LUKE. Whakatiri, August Ith, 1917.
