PUKEKOHE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

At the monthly meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council, held on Wednesday evening, there were present the Mayor (Mr IT. G. R Mason), Councillors A. B. Barter, R. Bilkey, J. Patterson, J. T. Stembridge, A. P. Daysh, F J. Morrow, G-. H. Armstrong, with tin Town Clerk (Mr J. F. Deane). REPAIRS WANTED Messrs Frank Perkins and Co. wrote drawing the Council's attention to the unsatisfactory state cf the footpath around their property. They especially asked that the main road facing Queen street should be put in order and for which they would pay their share of the cost. They also requested that scoria should be put down from King street to their bakehouse from the keib to the present metal. Cr Bar er enquire 1 if a deposit had been paid for building license which would go toward any damage which might be done to the footpa'h The Town Clerk replied in the affiiniative. The Mayor explaiaed that a deposit paid must cover tin cost of any damage to the footpath. Cr Barter said that if any damage was done to the footpath when the building was erected Mr Perkins was entitled for something to be done Cr Patterson said he believed Messrs Perkins would be prepared to pay half the cost and he moved that the work should bo put in hand provided they were prepared to pay half the cost. Cr Barter seconded. Cr Morrow expressed the opiniou that other work was quite as necessary. In answer to an enquiry the Foreman said the cost of the «ork would he about £ 1 2. Cr Stembiidge said he would like tosuppoit Messrs Perkins' request hut he considered the money to be spent on that work could be better used in the iutere.-ti of oth r ratepayer The Mayor was inclined to agree to the last sp°aker as he did not at first think the cost would have been so much as estimated. Russell, in a lett. r, stated that he was prepand to cany out electric light installation an t that having purchased an extensive stock of electrical accessories he would shortly be displacing same in his showroom and asked for the Council's support. The matter was referred to the Lighting Committee. Cr Barter, reporting on an application for the supply of electric power during the day, mentioned that the Engineer (Mr Fenu) could not promise that day power would be available but in his (Cr Barter'.-) opinion the Council would have to find ways and means to supply ihe same as it was an important question. It was resolved that the matter should receive the Council's consideration. SEI'HOX STREET Mr \V. S Russell wrote complaining of the oveillow of storm water on to h;s property in Seddon street. IMF. l-IRE IIRIOAHE Mr 11. J. Rollinson, hon secretary to Pukekohe Fire Brigade, submitted alterations of rules of the Brigade for approval of tho Council. It was resolvod on the motion of Cr Patterson that the rules should be referred to the Fire Brigade Committee and brought up at the next meeting of the Council. I'L'NI ROAO WATER TAIILE Mr J. B. Rowe, in a letter, drew attention to the bad state of the water table from J. McOormicks to Rowe's corner on the Puni road and asked that improvements be effected so that the water did not cross the road. The matter was refolded to the Works Committee with power to act. A MUD ROAD. Mr J. Young wrote asking if a footpath could bo formed on the street known as Ridgways. Tho condition was such that it was impassable and to get out of his property he had to trespass on a neighbour's land. He stated that his child who was attending school had to wade through water. As he suffered in consequence he was afraid he would be obliged to take him from school As he paid his share of rates ho asked that he should receive his shaie of street comforts. Cr Patterson described the road as "scandalous" and said that unless there was something more substantial than mud people could not "■et an access to their houses. Tho road in question was nothing more than a cattle track. The Mayor who knew the road in questioii ven'ured to suggest that a ftuee should be placid on one side so as to provide a footpath that seemed to him to bo the best solution Cr Patterson considered that pa it of the road should bo blocked which would re'icve tho cattle traffic at one end. Both Crs Daysh aid Moirow expressed the (.pinion that a fence would not suffice as there was nothing to prevent cattle jumping over it. Cr Barter was afraid that nothing could be done this w'uter. Cr Armstrong thought the Mayor's suggestion a good one After further discussion it was re solved that the m-ttei should be inferred to the Works Committee with a request to submit an inexpensive remedy. APPROACH To POVXP Cr Barter drew atteution :o the unsa'isfnetory state of the approach to the Pound and the difficulty exp«ri"nced by ihe P.uiudkeep'r in driving horses and cattle t > the Pound Frequently, Cr Barter exp'ained, the Potindkepper had to secure help to inp iiirid cattle, lie suggested that a "race" should be constructed which would improve the approach. Under such circumstances a Ranger would have a knowledge of the cattle allowed to graze and unlicensed cattle would then be impounded In someplace?, said J lis Woiship, the licensing of cattle provided a source of revenue and he thought the practice would be a good one to adopt in the Borough. Cr Armstrong endorsed the romaiks of His Worship and supported tho suggestion. The Mayor said that tho question involved the appointment of a Hanger in which Cr Barter also concurred. Cr Stembiidge expressed the opinion that cattle should not bo allowed on tho roads as they did much damage. The Mayor said that th i present position was an unsatisfactory one and on his motion it was resolved to refer the matter to the Finance Committee to advise as to tho licensing of cattle and tho appointment of a Kanger. SALE Of I.\Ml'S Cr Baiter reported that he had disposed of the lamps and posts in the Borough to the Papakura Town Board at a satisfactory price and it was arranged thai tho same should bo consigned to them. KAI Es On the motion of the Mayor the rates v\ere struck in accordance with the published notice. fit HAMILTON Cr Morrow, having referred to the absence of Cr Hamilton, the Council unanimously agreed to write him a letter expressing their pleasure at hearing that he was progressing in health. A COMPLAINT Mr H. Ilorrock.o, of Tuakau road, drew attention to water running on his property situated on Tuakau road. He asked that something should he done to remedy it. Cr Patterson said that Mr Horrocks had a just claim and on his motion it was resolved that work should bo done co remedy the defect complained of. RAILWAY SIMM; Tho District Engineer (Mr D. T. Mcintosh Railway Department, Auckland, wrote in reply t> a letter from the Council that it was not convenient to give the Council space for dumping metal in the station yard. The Mayor expressed the opinion that probably co operation in the matter could be secured with the County Council and it was agreed to make representation to that authority on the subject. UOAH WIDEIUXG I'KO.IEiT The Woiks Committee reporting on the psoposal to widen iho road at Dell's corner stated that Mr Dell asked that the requirements of the Council should be put in wiiting when he would consider the matter. ELECTRIC Lloll IT.No. The Lighting Committee reported that they had visited the Power House and that the engine and fly wheel had been placed in position, also the dynamo. Ihe scrubber and silencer had been erected outside the building. A bed had been cut out of the b; nk and concreted, on which will be placed the cooling tanks. The switch-boards were now being elected and the hopper for reception of coal was under construction. The Committee desired to record their appreciation of the efficient way the work had been so far carried out, coLsidering the bad state of the weather and difficulties met with in handling such heavy material. Tho work had been accomplished without a single instance of damage bein# done to any part of the engine, which had been removed from the dairy faclorv to the Power House. The icpoit was adopted.
