RED CROSS GATHERING
A very successful " Red Cross Evening " was given by Mrs Grattan on Friday evening, July 6th, in the Bam a Rama Hall. The building was crowded and a very enjoyable time was spent. A stall presided over by Miss Alexander assisted by Mrs Fox helped to augment the funds considerably. Several competitions were [carried out during the evening. A motor party from Auckland assisted with the musical part of the programme. Miss Lillas provided the music for the dance, her younger sister [delighted the audience with her exhibition of dancing the Highland Fling and Irish Jig. Mr Alexander apologised for the absence of singers who were expected, but the evening was well spent, amusement being provided for all. Progressive euchre for those who did not dance, and games for the young ones who seemed to thoroughly enjoy them. A bounteous supper was handed round by willing helpers. The winners of the competitions were as follows : Table centre, Mrs Quinn ; supper cloth, Miss Lillas ; jewel casket, Mr Harrison; cake, Messrs T. Baker and B. Girdwood. The proceeds amounted to £ls lis.
A meeting of ladies was held at Mrs Sharp's last Wednesday afternoon to make arrangements towards helping the school children with the " Garden Party " they propose to hold in the school grounds next December. Mrs Trimmer was appointed It was decided by those present to each give a '• Gift Afternoon," theso afternoons to be held fortnightly until December, and tho Gifts thus obtained to he sold on the stall at tho " Garden Party." It was also arranged to hold a Red Cross social in September, tho Tuhiinata ladies having arranged one for August month. Some discussion took place over tho Dominion (lift scheme, those interested thought it a pity to drop it, as several had received cards of thanks from the recipients; especially the "'Xmas Billies," nearly allot which had been acknowledged, due letter received, ro parcels, said : "Though we do not got the parcels very often, thoy aio more than welcome when tli y do come, tho son especially, tli 'V ate everything out here."
