ALFRISTON-BROOKBY

j PATRIOTIC LEAGUE MEETING A meeting of the Alfriston-Brook-by Patriotic League was held in the hall last Friday night, the President (Mr H. Moody) being in the chair. The Chairman regretted to announce that Mr C. F. Fitzpatrick, the Secretary, had tendered his resignation, owing to his being called up in the Ballot.—Eugolistic references were made by the Chairman of the services rendered in the past by Mr Fitzpatrick and he ascribed to him the success of the recent carnival and, in fact, the whole work of the League. Mr G. Mclnnes and Mr H. Chandler spoke supporting the Chairman's remarks and while regretting losing Mr Fitzpatrick's services locally they said the Dominion had gained a worthy recruit. Mention was made of Mr J. Sutton's services as assistant Secretary, who had also been called up. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded by acclamation to the retiring Secretary, and Mr Fitzpatrick, on rising to reply, was received with applause. He very modestly stated that he had only done his bit, up to now, but the time had come when a greater responsibility was involved, and he hoped he would be as successful in the future as in the past. A general discussion ensued as regards the desirability of continuing the League owing to the Red Cross League largely carrying on similar ! work.—On the motion of Mr G. Mclnnes, seconded by Mr H. Chand- j ler, it was resolved the Alfriston-1 Brookby Patriotic League be forth- j with suspended. Mr Mclnnes, speaking to the motion, thought that owing to the principal workers being called up it was better to concentrate all efforts into one channel, the Red Cross League. The motion was carried unanimously. It was further decided to ask the Red Cross League to take over the charge of farewells to "the Boys" leaving the district.

The quarterly meeting of the School Committee was held in the Brookby School on Monday, July 9th. Present : Mr W. Bmith (chairman and secretary), Messrs H. Muir, D. Kemp, T. Aicken and H. Moody. Business of a general character was transacted. A very complimentary report was received from Miss Hill, head teacher at Alfriston School, on the capabilities of Miss Cranch, assistant teacher, whilst a vote of thanks and appreciation of Miss Kill's services tendered to her by the annual meeting of householders was also received. A request for a bookcase to enable the scholars to start a school library was favourably entertained and was left to Messrs Aicken, Muir and Moody with power to act. The question of sanitary duties and other details was similarly disposed of. Accounts to the amount of £l2 were passed for payment. A most interesting evening was enjoyed by about sixty friends who gathered together in the Alfriston Hall on Friday evening last at the invitation of Mrs Chandler and Miss M Sutton. An interesting feature of the gathering was that each one had to wear a badge representing a book and also each had a mock menu card to interpret. Miss Jean Moore won the lady's prize and Mr W. Moody the men's. Miss Cranch ably rendered two songs. Mr W. Mocdy sang " My Little Grey Home in the West," and being encored gave " Keep the Home Fires Burning." Cards and dancing were indulged in at intervals.
