MANGERE ROA.D BOARD. The monthly meeting of the , Mangere Road Board was held last m (Monday) evouing, the members being Messrs Kirkbride (rTßrimian), Massey, House, Montgomery and Gooseman and the clerk (Mr E. Ashcroft). st. john's lake. A letter was read from the Onehunga Borough Council asking for permission to canvass the Mangere district for signatures to a petition to oppose the draining of Bt. John's Lake and the Mangere Board was also asked to oppose the scheme as the Council considered that it would seriously affect the Onehunga Water supply. The chairman moved, Mr House seconded, and it was agreed that permission should be granted to the Onehunga Council to canvass the district but the Board, not being conversant with details, considered it inadvisable to themselves to take action in the matter. A MILITARY HALL. The Mangere Branch of the Women's Patriotic League wrote asking support for the building of a social hall at Tauherenikau Camp for the benefit of men in training but the Board decided that it was a matter for the Y.M.C.A. or some other such body. MISCELLANEOUS. The Papatoetoe Read Board wrote in regard to the wet state of Portage Road and offered to bear half the cost of necessary work thereon.— The chairman reported that the matter had been attended to The Misses Brown wrote objecting to the lowering of t v e ditches adjoining their property, stating that they considered it unnecessary and that it would effect an unsightly appearance to their property. They also thought that there would be a danger of the banks collapsing.— The clerk was instructed to reply that the Board was prepared to erect a guard fence as offered previously.
A request wr.s received fiom Mr F. Jones for a gate to be erected at the end of the formed part of Westney Road to prevent stock straying on to his property. Owing to the inundation of the sea, he said, the fences were continually slipping.—lt was resolved that a gate shou'd be erected at the terminus of Westney Road as requested. PROPOSED TECHNICAL BCHOOL. A letter was read from the Onehunga School Committee relative to the provision of a Technical School, which they suggested should be erected at the Royal Oak Corner, which they considered would be a central position. The Government, they said, would give a grant of £ for £ and it was proposed to raise about £SOO, a sum which they considered would provide a fair building. The support of the Mangere Board was requested to the same.
Members thought that it was not advisable to go iu for expensive buildings at present but they agreed to suppoit the schema although not prepared at present lo state as to the pxtent they would assist financially. WATER SUPPLY A letter was received from the Onehunga Borough Council re supply of wa'er stating th it they could not give a guarantee of permanency of supply but that they would supply at lOd per thousand gallons as long as there was water available.
The Board's Engineer (Mr F. E. Pewell) forwarded details of his recommendation for the building of a reservoir on Mangere Mountain at a cost of £370. It was resolved on the motion of Mr House, seconded by Mr Kirkbride, that the Board should ascertain the number of residents who wished to connect up with the water supply at the bridge end, the matter to be again considered at the next meeting. It was also decided that the Clerk should write to the Otahuhu Borough Council to ascertain if they would be prepared to supply water to the Otahuhu end of Mangere district and on what terms. BATING A formal resolution was adopted, in accordance with notico of motion given at the last meeting, striking a General District Rate of Jd in the £ for the current year. foreman's report The Foreman reported that he had replaced culverts in Portage, Rosella and Ihumata roads and that all roads required patching. The footpath at the Mangere end. of the bridge required repairs. All replaced culverts had withstood the recent heavy rains satisfactorily. It was decided to go on with th e patching of roads. BRIDGE API-ROACH It was reported that the contribution of £3GO promised by Onehunga Borough Council towards forming the approach to the bridge on the Onehunga side had not been paid owing to some legal technicality. It was decided that Mr A. E. Skelton should be instructed to write to the Prime Minister placing the matter of Onehunga's promised contribution before him an l the Chairman agreed to also write Mr Massey in reference to same.
