WOMEN'S PATRIOTIC LEAGUE
PUKEKOHE BRANCH A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Pukekohe Branch of the Women's Patriotic League was held in the Borough Council rooms on Wednesday, June 20th. Present, Miss Webster (in the chair), Mesdames Motion, Stuart, O'Connor, Webb, Hogan, Baxter (Secretary), Misses Usher and Graham.
An apology for absence was received from Mrs Mcßae. Several letters were read from Miss Speeding, Secretary of the Central League, Auckland. In the first she intimated that the Central League intended to co-operate with the Victoria League in the management of the Red Cross shop, in Shortland street, at which it was expected to realise £3O weekly. The writer stated she hoped the Pukekohe branch would help with either of the following: Cakes, jams, bottled fruits, sweets, vegetables, etc., for shop 6th and 7th July.—lt was agreed that the Secretary should write Miss Speeding stating that as the League had only recently paid to the Red Cross a donation of £GO, they favoured waiting a short time when all the members werewilling to again help the worthy caul!. In a second letter Miss Speeding stated that owing to the difficulty and uncertainty of cartage and freight, as well as expense, it had been decided to make all the hussifs in future at the Town Hall and she would value any financial assistance the Pukekohe branch could give towards the fund.—lt was agreed to pay £1 per month for above. A third letter touched on the uncertainty of the Dominion Gift Scheme, and stated that the matter was being thoroughly probed to the bottom and she hoped in a short time to be able to give full details. ' A fourth letter from the same writer was also read, in which she made an urgent appeal to all branch Leagues for funds to help maintain the Central League in Auckland. She said many calls were made to the Main League and consequently the general fnnd was depleted to such an extent as to make replenishment necessary if they were to continue to carry on the whole work in the future as in the past. —Mrs Stuart sooke in favour of helping the Central League, stating she felt it was the Branch League's duty whore funds permitted. She proposed that a donation of £5 should be given and this was agreed to. A letter was read from Mr L. J. Deo Flow urging the sale of French stamps in aid of the Fronch Red Cross, whilst a letter from Mr H. D. Robertson, Hon Secretary British Red Cross, requested assistance in the sale tickets for an art union of the picture entitled "In titno of Peril."
Miss Webster reported that 252 Dominion Gifts had been collected last month.
Miss Usher reported that tho Sewing Committee had made and despatched to Auckland 50 hussifs and 65 sanitary shirts and she also submitted an acknowledgment from headquarters for last month's supply. It was decided that the Secretary should write Miss Townson a letter of thanks for the magnificent donation she had given as the result of her concert.
Mrs Stuart reported that she had packed and sent to the Head Depot one box of literature. The convener further stated that the supply of books was very low and hoped a supply would be forthcoming by the end of the month.
Mrs Baxter reported having received acknowledgment of the last two parcels of knitting sent to the Central League and also stated she had sent to Auckland 43 caps, 1G scarves, 40 pairs sox, 11 pairs mittens and one parcel of old linen. The convener applied to the Executive for the sum of £7 7s to be used for the purchase of wool for the month's work.—The same was granted. Accounts to the value of £ls 17s were passed for payment. The receipt of the following articles was reported, viz: Caps: Mrs Hewlett 9, Miss Graham 7, Mesdames Crum and Lux ford 4 each, Mesdames Keith. W. Blade, McKiney, Lindsay, Fitness, Maxwell, A. W. Bell (Manuku), and Mis? Fanny Moore 2 each. Mesdames W. T. J mes, Papesch, Wilson iFranktou), Toyer, Misses Robinson, Ada Porter, Edith Porter, Hewlett, one each.
Scarves: Mrs Ash ford, Misses Edie Perkins, Ada Porter 2 each, Mesdames J. J Hut, A. Landon (Puni), G Brown, R. J. Stevenson, Guthry, Mioses Barber, M. Brigman (Puni), I MeWatt (Puni), Hewlett, Doris Walters. Sox: Mesdames B. T. S. Moore 4 pairs, Mr? Crrokes 5 pairs, Mesdames Fleming, TTarriman, Tloirocks, Meikle, C. F. BUCKLAND BJIANCH
The Buckland Branch met in tho Public Hall on the afternoon of June 28th, when Mrs Wily presided. Donations and work handed in were as follows :
Mrs Delaney 10s, Mrs Jamieson Bs, Mesdames Jackson, and Neale 7s each, Mesdames Wily, Olson, Murray and Driver 5s each, Mrs Wright 3s Gd, Mesdames Davy and Bullock os each, Mesdames Smith, Milroy, Graham, Attenborough, J. Wylie and Melville 2s fid each ; Mesdames Bland, Civil, Kearney, Peters, and Avery 2s each. Socks : Mrs Milroy 2 pairs, Mrs Driver 5, Mrs McKean 5, Mrs Walker 4, Mesdames E. Walker, Johnston, Harper and Avery 1 each; caps, Mrs McKean 3 ; mittens, Mrs Newton 4.
It was decided to donate 10 3 monthly to the hu'ssif fund.
DRURY, RUNCIMAN AND KARAKA BRANCH.
This branch of the A W.P.L has, during this, its its second year of activity held twelve ordinary and one special general meeting with an average attendance of 20 members. The knitting, chiefly of socks, is the special branch of work to which the members have devoted themselves. A parcel of knitted comforts has been forwarded eyery month to the Mayoress, Auckland—--6G9 articles (539 pairs of socks) having been sent during the year. All special appeals have met with good response and a contribution of produce (nearly one ton) was made to the Red Cross shop, Auckland, during March. The Dominion Gift Scheme has been supported, the children of the Drury and Karaka schools having helped in this direction. Each ; month tho members have made up and filled 25 hussifs from materials supplied by the Central Committee.
During tho past six months the members have provided and made up 25 sanitary singlets each month and forwarded to the Central Committee.
Members have much pleasure in again thanking the Drury HalliCommittee for the use of the Hall free of charge and also take tho opportunity of thanking Miss Rugs; for her unfailing kindness at all times, and further they thank Mr S. Feilding for auditing the accounts. The balance sheet for the year is as follows: Receipts—Cash brought forward, £2O 12s Gd ; contributions, £6S 13s ( Jd; Dominion gifts, £l3; afternoon tea by mombers, £0 14s Id ; 'Xrnas gifs, £27 19s; children's hospital, £1; badges, £2; sale of Belgian tickets, £7 9s 10s; wool sold for Red Cross work, 10s Gd ; Red Cross shop, £3 15s 3d , contributions to Y.M.O.A. £72 19s; smaller amounts, 10s 4d. Total, £22 5 5s Id.
