PAPAKURA.
FARMERS' UNION SOCIAL.
Last Monday evening the Papakura Branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union held a " Social Evening " in the Methodist Hall and there was a good attendance. The President (Mr R. M. Gillespie) introduced Mr James Boddie, of Te Kuiti, who addressed the gathering on the aims of the Union and reeeived a vote of thanks for his discourse. Among the musical items rendered were songs by the Misses King and Johnson and Messrs S»aton and Gibbs, whilst Mr Polsen gave a recitation.
Supper was served at 10 p.m. A vote of thanks to the artists and the ladies who supplied the supper was heartily passed. The National Anthem brought a very enjoyable evening to a close.
In a recent list of casualties ap pears the name among the wounded of Pte. L J. Grice, who, prior to his enlistment, was a member of the teaching staff at the Papakuaa school.
On Wednesday of last week in connection with the local Lodge of Oddfellows a very successful euchre party was held, Mr W. J. Rowe, N.G., being in charge. Although the attendance was not large, there was a good deal of interest shown in the game, the following being the winners:—Mrs J.Walker Ist, Mrs I. Mack 2nd, and Mrs Allen booby prize. Men: Harry Smith Ist, J. Richardson 2nd, and E. Lever booby award.
At the last meeting of the Literary and Debating Society, presided over by Mr D. W. Jones, papers were contributed on "Democracy'' and the "Early Closing Movement" and created a good deal of discussion. Other subjects were also dealt with and altogether an enjoyable evening was spent. These meetings are held fortnightly and new members are always welcome.
