PAPATOETOE

Dilworth from whom copies of the paper may be ordered.] On Friday last the Auckland Reel Cross Bhop in Shortland street was under the control of the Papatoetoe Branch of the Women's Patriotic League, all produce and supplies being given by the residents of Papatoetoe, who responded to the call whole heartedly, three motor car loads of provisions being sent in. Despite the inclemency of the weather the ladies were able to report that £4O Is was taken during the day and the committee wish to thank the r sidents for the hearty support in the supply of provisions. Much amusement was caused in the weight guessing competition of a turkey presented by Mr Wills MeLauohlin, the bird being finally won by Mrs Taylor, of Auckland, ISAlbs being the con ect weight. The sum of £3 Is was realised for the weight guessing. The proceeds of the day's shopping are to be donated to the funds of the Victoria League. Some days ago several cases of benzine were discharged from the Auckland train at the Papatoetoe station about a chain or so from the platform. When the farmer to whom the goods vrere consigned arrived to take delivery it was discovered that several cases we:e missing. Considering the short time that the benzine was left on the side of the line and the fact that it was broad daylight their removal was a very sharp piece of work. So far the authoi ities have been unable to trace the missing goods. A patiiotic concert, under the auspices of the Red Cross Society will be held in St. John's Church on Tiusday evening, July 10th. The progiamme to be supplied by the uhvir aud friends of St. John's Choir will consist in the fust part of anthems and also solos by Miss Paisley, soprano, and Mr W. Firth, tenor. The second portion of the programme will be a cantata entitled " The Boiling Seasons," under the hat"ii of Mi G Foster. During the tvt-uing Mr Brickford, o ganisi r of the li'ed Cross in Auckland, accompanied by several nurses of the Militaiy Staff, will deliver hii addiess on Red Cross wo.k on and off the In Id. Admission will be free, but a col hciion will be taken up and it is hoped to raise a good amount. The annual concort and tea in connection with the St. John's Sunday School was held on Wednesday evening when there was a very large ga'heiing of children at.d friends. The Rev. ('has. Potter occupied the chair. Vocal solos were rendered by Mrs M< - Culloch, Miss lloilge and Mi J A Bradstreet, duets by Mrs Galloway and Miss Daisley, musical mo: ologues by Mr E. Bradstreet, and a pianoforte solo by Miss Grant The entertainment concluded with a humorous dialogue entitled " Only a Hoax,'' by the members of the Bible Class. Over one hundred new books were added to the Sunday School library and the library is now open to the members of the congregation.
