ALFRISTON

NEW MINISTER WELCOMED A complimentary social was tendered to the Bev D. Hales, the newly inducted Presbyterian Minister in charge of the Papakura district, in the Alfriston Hall on Thursday, June 28th, the Rev Porter presiding. A very enjoyable evening was spent in social harmony, a varied programme of songs, recitations and speeches being carried out as follows Pianoforte solo, "Miss Wedding; song, Mr Teads (Papatoetop), encored; recitation, Mr Smith (Rrookby) " How Belsyn Fell Out"; song, Mrs J. T, Bodle; song, Mr Te ads, encored; song, Mrs Bodle ; recitation, Mr Smith, " How Beslyn Fell In." The Chairman spoke forcibly on the duty of the Pastor and also the duty of the congregation. Mr E. D. McLennan referred to past Ministers who had laboured in the parish, namely, Rev Norrie (who had worked for half a century), and the highly esteemed Rev Smith and the RevD. Madill who was unfortunately compelled to resign owing to ill-health. Mr D. A. Reid, on behalf of the Presbyterians of Alfriston, extended to the new Pastor a hearty welcome, assuring him of whole-hearted support and trusting that his future labours would prove a blessing to himself and to those he ministered to. Mr H. Moody proposed a hearty vote of thanks to one and all who had assisted to make the evening the pronounced success it was. The Rev Hales replied in a very able speech asking for the hearty coone and all, assuring the friends present that he, Mrs Halt s and family would do their utmost, to extend the influence and power of the Church throughout the district. The meeting closed with the sing ing of the Doxology and Benediction. Local friends provided light refreshments and opportunity was given for friends to be introduced to Mr and Mrs Hales. PAPAKURA ROAD BOARD The monthly meeting of the Papakura Road Board was held in the Board's offioe, Alfriston, on Monday, ~ June. 25th Present, Messrs E. D. McLennan (chairman), D. A. Reid, J. Trimble, J Embling, W Hall, and the Clerk (Mr H Moody). RANFURLY ROAD A lengthy letter from Mr Enos Pegler, of Manurewa, was read re Ranfurly Road and Mr Hankly and Mr Hall, both residents on Ranfurly road, spoke to the necessity of some permanent work being done. It was resolved that the Clerk should arrange through the Board's solicitors to make fresh application for a f 500 loan, the same to be an area loan on the conditions previously agreed upon by the ratepayers interested. NOXIOUS WEEDjS The Clerk was instructed to forward notices to all property owners who had noxious weeds on their road frontages, it being reported that in some instances gorse, etc, seriously handicapped the working of the grader. The advisability was referred to of taking proceedings forthwith to make defaulters realise their responsibilities. WATER DRAINAGE Mr J. H. Hansch interviewed the Board and asked that the congestion of water on his boundary should be relieved. He pointed out the Wairoa Board was concentrating a real volume of water through his drains and he complained that one of his neighbours would not allow it to pass through his property other than by overflow. The Chairman agreed to confer with the Chairman of the Wairoa Board (Mr Bell) on the matter. MISCELLANEOUS Several requests for repairs and metal from ratepayers were received, most of which were granted, the rest being held over till the weather improves. Mr Embling reported that the work on Boake's Hill was not completed but was under way, the weather hindering its progress. The Clerk was instructed to write to the Wairoa Board drawing their attention to the dangerous state of the top of Oram's Hill. RATE Tin Chairman moved, and Mr Trimbe seconded, and it was carried unanimously, that a general rate of three-eights of a penny in the £ on the capital value should bo struck. CONTRACTS A general discussion took place on the prospect of future contracts and it was deemed advisable in viow of the excessively wet weather to hold off heavy carting till the weather iinprovi d. The fortnightly meeting of Red Cross workers was hold at the residence of Mr H. Mo >dy. It was decided to hold the Rnd Cross function in the Alfriston Hall some evening near the next full moon when the 2s (id competition will close. It is hoped that a considerable sum will bera'sed in this item alone.
