Mr Massey's Visit To Pukekohe.

;To the Editor] Sir,—l notice the Franklin County Council, who are arrangirg a welcome to the Premier, have decided on a dinner at 15s a head, which means that only the few who are able or willing to pay such a sum can attend the function. It appears to me, Sir, the Council has made a big mistake in adopting this costly welcome and I write to suggest that a much more suitable form for such a function would be a public gathering to which everyone could be invited. Let the convenors feecure Buckland's Horse Bazaar, run up some seats, temporary lights, etc., make a collection or sell tickets for 6d or Is each and give proceeds to the "Wounded Soldiers' Fund. Some such form of welcoming the Premier and Finance Minister would, we feel sure, be agreeable to the public and much more sensible than a los dinner, which at this time of national stress and sorrow is hardly seemly, to say nothing of the extravagance, when some of our wounded men can only get 14s a week allowance by way of pension. I commend this suggestion to the convenors for their careful consideration.—l am, etc., E. ALLAN. Buckland, 27th June, 1917. The position is that, ia addition to the banquet in the evening, the County Council has arranged an afternoon reception (admission FREE) to take place on Monday, July 9th, in the old Show Ground. This proposal was transmitted by cable to the Prime Minister but owing to uncertainty as to his movements after Parliament had assembled Mr Massey was unable until yesterday to make any definite promise of attendance. Yesterday, however, he telegraphed that he would be able to bo present at both the afternoon and evening functions.—Editor. |
