'lhe slim tag" of appront'cos caused by many youths having gone to the war, has made it necessary tnat some modification should he made in all industrial awards and agreements relating to tlie number to bo employed. The Government, therefore, in the " New Zealand Gazette" of th.. 31st May, 1917, Lave issued an Order-iu-Council, a summary of which is as follows: I.—lf any apprentice becomes a mem. her of the Expeditiouay Force, hi.s cmp'oycr may, at any time after the apprentice, has been one month in camp, .<-mploy another apprentice in lieu of the first apprentice, and may continue io employ the n?w apprentice for tho full period of his apprenticeship, notwithstanding the return to his employ of tho first-mentioned apprentice. 2.—lf such new apprentice becomes a member of t?ie Expeditionary Force, tho same conditions shall apply with' regard to such new apprentice. 3.—Any apprentice who has been a member of the Expeditionary Forco may, on ceasing to Ik? a member of that Force, te re-employed by his former employer, or, with the consent of tho Inspector of Factories, by any other employer engaged in the same industry, a.ul may continue to be so employed until the completion of his period of apprenticeship, notwithstanding t hat the employer may already have the number of apprentices allowed by an award or industrial agreement.
