PATUMAHOE
SOLDIERS FAKEWELLED There was a large attendance at the Patumahoe Hall on Friday e. ening last at the invitation of the Mauku Farewell and Souvenir Committee in honour of four local members of the 28 th Reinforcement draft who were up on their final leave. In addition to the local residents a number of visitors from Pukekohe and other districts were present, and the attendance would no doubt have been even larger but that similar functions were in progress the same evening at Pukekohe and Puni.
Shortly before the supper hour, Mr J. Henry (Councillor for the Riding) after an appropriate speech presented, on behalf of the Committee, each of the four guests of the evening, viz, Privates F. Clark, L Howe, R. Quinn, and Sinton, with n. luminous faced wristlet watch, which were buckled on the wrists of the recipients by four young ladies who volunteered for the purpose. Privates Howe and Quinn, said Mr Henry, had been born in the district whilst a number of years' residence on the part of Privates Clark and Sinton had assured their neighbours of their excellent qualities. He bade them God-speed and a safe and early roturn. and added that all who know them were confident they would do their duty and be a credit to their country and the Empire.
After a few words from Mr W. Howard, the chairman of the Sou venir Committee, the guests briefly acknowledged the gifts. Supper was then handed round, and afterwards dancing was resumed and kept up till a late hour in the morning.
The dance music was supplied by Messrs W. Howard and Hunter, extras being played by the Misses Bailey (2). Mr C. Howard as usual proved an efficient M.C. A reminder is given of the meet ing of dairy suppliers to be held in the Patumahoe Hall next Thursday evening to discuss local arrangements for the coming dairying season.
Particulars will be found in our advertising columns of the programme to be presented at the concert to be held, under the auspices of the Mauku Bible Class, in the Patumahoe Hall to-morrow (Wednesday) evening in aid of the Y.M C.A. Trench Comforts' Fund. Mr W. M Barton, tho local Presbyterian Missionary, has been most enthusiastic in his arrangements for the entertainment and it is to be hoped that the attendance and financial support will bo in keeping with the deserving cause for which the concert has been promoted.
