Wake Up, Clevedon!

[To the Editob] Sir,—" Rip Van Winkle's " efforts in humour are very laudable but like most humourists he exaggerates to a slight extent and especially so in regard to the bumps on the roads. I really think " Rip " must have " bumps " on the brain and what else could he expect after being so " unprogressive " as to sleep on a bed of spawls for twenty years. Has be really been along the roads lately, since awaking ? I think not, -else he might frequently meet vehicles at night with- no lights driving along these fearful (?) roads full of Johnson holes etc, !

As to the band of progressives—not real Clevedonites—being the moving spirits this is absuid. The leading members of the A. and P. Society are old Clevedonites—the Sports Olubs in the district have as their mainstay real Clevedonites or their children,- while among the members of the Hoad Board itself are men who take a keen interest in everything pertaining to the progress of the district.

But arm-chiir philosophers such as " Rip " are found in every district and though quite content to live in it till finally " dug out " yet they pretend to be authorities on everything pertaining to the welfare of the district, and still take no part in assisting in its progress. Such men as these can trace the Clevedon flood 8 to the war in France, can tell you how gunpowder may be prepared from rapou or extracted essence of Maori-bugs made a marketable commodity ! To conclude, our friend designates me as Noah—the most progressive man about the time of the flood Thanks! And Clevedon he calls the Ark with two of its kind etc But there is only, one of his kind unless Dame Van Winkle appears on the scene pretty soon ! So without further ado I bpg to again subscribe myself " A REAL OLEVEDONITE."
