[The Papatoetoe-Agent for "The Times" is Mr W. J. Dilworth from whom copies of the paper may be ordered.] PAPATOETOE ROAD BOARD A special meeting of the Papatoetoe Road Board and Hall Committee was held on Monday evening of last week to consider the tenders for the Public Hall, the striking of a general rate for the ensuing year, and also the roading conditions for the Papatoetoe Gardens Estate. TOWN HALL TENDERS The tenders received for building the Town Hall were as follows, viz., J. T. Julian £3497, Mande and Fausert£34sl, RichardsandThomp son £3224, Grevttt and Sin £3192, D Jack £3153 ss, F. H. Wells £3llß 14s, C H. Frankham £3OIB. W. E. Hutchinson £2990, C F Hainan and Sons £2947, J. W Bambury £2947. D. Lye and Son's tender of £2754 was withdrawn owing to a clerical error. After mu: h discussion the Board decided that it was impossible to go on with the building as the tenders far exceeded the amount of the loan. It was finally resolved that the architect should be asked to go into the matter of the cost of the stage, upper room and conveniences with a view to deleting them from the contract if the price of the tender could be reduced by £boo and at the same time to communicate with the lowest tenderers as to carrying out the modified plans. The Board were of the opinion that it was not advisable to reduce the size of the body of the hall in any way, but that the extra conveniences could lie added at a later date. In the meantime a temporary moveable platform would serve as a stage. RATING The Chairman gave notice of motion that at the next ordinary meeting of the Board he would move to strike and levy a general rate of
three-eighths of a penny in the £ on the rateable values in the Papatoetoe Eoad District. BOADINO CONDITIONS The roading conditions as submitted by the Board's Engineer for Papatoetoe Gardens Estate roads were approved and forwarded to the syndicate.
I A troop of Boy Scouts to be known as the "Kohinoor Troop" has been formed by Mr S. Barton, of Papatoetoe. Up to date the troops consists of six patrols and in each patrol there are eight boys including a leader and corporal. The troop is under the command of Scoutmaster Barton. Sergt Sanderson and BuglerAitchison are also attached to the organisation. The boys have taken up the movement very enthusiastically and show much keeness in the work. It is the intention of the Scoutmaster to erect a club room and gymnasium for physical culture and he also hopes to form a fife and drum band. The Scout movement should appeal to all parents of boys in the district both from a moral and physical standpoint and it is hoped that the residents will take up the matter and give it their whole hearted and most liberal support. The Rev H. Mason, of Otahuhu, has offered his aid to the organisation as also have several promient residents of the district and everything points to a successful future for the Kohinoor Troop. Information has come to hand that one of the largest estates in this district will be acquired for Government purposes and that negotiations are now proceeding.
