PAPAKURA.

RATEPAYERS' ASSOCIATION. The first annual meeting of the recently formed Ratepayers' Association was held on Monday of last week, Mr D. W. Jones (President) being in the ehair.

A letter was read from the Town Board promising attention to sug gestions made by the Association relative to the stock road and the improvement of the Cemetery. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr D. W. Jones; Hon. Secretary, Mr R W. Mears; committee, Messrs E. S. Cole, D. W. Stewart, A. Willis, H. Watkinson, and S. Evans.

It was decided to communicate with the Town Board as to the expense of the Board's administration, to exprcsi opposition to the proposed grazing of cattle on roads, to suggest that the station entrance to the Reserve should be improved, and to ask the Board to request the Railway Department to light the lamp at the southern entrance to the station near the School

At the last meeting of the Town Board Mr H. Markwick mentioned that a rumour was in circulation in the town that the Board's men had been employed by him in the Board's time to do private work for him in the Board's time to do private work for him in connection with the erection of a building on the Great South road. He stated that having obtained a permit to buill from the Board some of the wire fencing not required was given to the Board's surfaceman on condition that he took it away. This he did in his own time.—The Board were satisfied with the explanation, and recognised that there was no truth in the report in question.

The death took place on Tuesday last of Mona Susan Burgess, the eldest daughter of Mr Robert Burgess, of Papakura, Deceased, who was only 7i years of age, was a great favourite with her schoolmates and as a sign of the respect in which she was held the whole of her class from the Papakura School was present at the funeral on Wednesday at the Presbyterian Cemetery, Papakura, the Rev Porter being the officiating minister. Besides the father and relatives of the family a large number of friends were also present at tho graveside.
