MANUREWA

At the monthly meeting of the Manurewa Town Board held last Monday evening there were present Messrs T. J. Corin (chairman), C. and G. Coxhead, E. Pegler, C. H. Lupton, F. Woods and H. V. Burton, with the Clerk (Mr T. W. Bell). HILL EOAD TENDERS. The chairman announced that two tenders had been received for work to be done, according to specifications, on Hill Road.— As the amounts differed considerably and there appeared to be some misunderstanding as to the actual work required it was decided to call for fresh tenders. ACETYLENE GAS. The New Zealand Acetylene Gas Company, Ltd., wrote stating that they had forwarded one street lamp generator and a length of pipe and they added that the lampa they had installed at Fapakura and other places had given every satisfaction. The letter was " received," Mr Lupton remarking that they might as well give the lamp a trial. Mr Burton said so far the lighting was nothing to boast about, but the chairman remarked that it took time for the lamp to get into proper working order. EOAD OVEBBBIDGE. The District Engineer (Mr D. T. Mcintosh) New Zealand Railway Department, Auckland, wrote enquiring if a clear width of 20 feet for the proposed road over the bridge north of Manurewa station would be sufficient. That width, it was stated, would be the same as the road the Board proposed to make. It was resolved that a reply should be sent that a 20ft bridge would be satisfactory to the Board. A GOVERNMENT HEDGE. The Chief Postmaster, Auckland, wrote relative to a claim of 9s by the Board for trimming a hedge abutting on the Great South Road and contending that the Board had no jurisdiction over that part of the road. The letter was " received." MANTJREWA STATION. Messrs Harrison and Grierson, Surveyor?, wrote forwarding plan of road deviation through Mr Lupton's property at Manurewa Station. After persuing the same the Board approved of the plan as submitted. MYEES' EOAD. Mr H. Bond wrote asking for a culvert to be placed at the junction of Myers' Road and the Great' South Road, so that it could be made safe for vehicular traffic. It was resolved that as the Board had no jurisdiction over the road in question the letter should be forwarded to the Papakura Road Board. OTAHTJHU TECHNICAL SCHOOL. An application was made by the Secretary (Mr G. W. Kemplay) o the Otahuhu Technical School for a contribution towards the School. On the motion of Mr Lupton it was resolved that the sum of £5 should be contributed. Station enteance. The District Engineer of the New Zealand Railways wrote in reply to the Board's request for the shifting of the entrance gate at the station , that he could not accede to the re--1 quest. Mr Lupton remarked that as the \ Department had considerably wid- . ened and improved the road the ! Board could not expect anything • further at present. A COMPLAINT. A letter was received from Mr D. 1 L. Nathan calling attention to the bad state of Hill road and especially to that portion near his entrance gate. On the motion of the chairman it was resolved that the water-tables should be cleared and six loads of scoria placed on the road to remedy the defects. HALL AND GREAT SOUTH ROADS. The clerk (Mr Alex. Bell) of the . Manukau County Council wrote in reply to a communication from the Board that the Council had decided that they could not expend any money for the removal of the cesspits at the corner of Hall and Great South Roads. The chairman mentioned that he had seen the Council's foreman who recommended that the cesspits should be raised. PROPOSED STOCK ROUTE. The chairman reported that when the deputation waited upon the . Railway Department with regard to the Board's acquisition of the old railway line as a stock route the Department's District Engineer (Mr Mcintosh) recommended that the Board should obtain offers from adjoining owners for the purchase of k the land and submit the same to the I Department. Mr Aspden was the only owner who had been approached and he had written making |# an offer. £Mr Aspden's letter was then read. d He stated that he was prepared to '* give the sum of £IOO towards purchasing the land from the Railway kt Department for the object intended. The chairman remarked that he ! considered that offer as very satisl* factory and only wished that a n similar offer would be made by the ,d other two owners. s. Mr Pegler pointed out that in the interview the Engineer laid special >e stress on the point that if the Railway Department handed over the land the Board would be required to waive any right for the Railway

Department to put a bridge over the road. The chairman remarked that it would be well to understand that no traffic bridge would be erected Mr Aspden, who wa9 present at the meeting, stated that his offer was an unconditional one and he had not taken into consideration the question of a bridge being erected when his offer was made. The chairman said that if the road was taken over by the Board it would be a heavy expense to maintain, but it would be of an ultimate advantage to the district generally. Mr Pegler urged that it would be more satisfactory if the Department fixed a price for the land, to which the chairman remarked that he believed the Department expected about £7OO, but if a good offer were made he thought the Department would consider it. No definite action was takeu as the Board decided to await an offer from the other two owners concerned. JOINT LOAN OF £2OOO. The chairman reported that at a meeting of the Manurewa Eoad Board held on the 21st May the Town Board was appointed to act as agent on behalf of both Boards in respect of the raising of the joint loan of £2OOO in the Manurewa Special Rating Area.—lt was accordingly resolved that a joint loan be raised for for £2OOO and that the Town Board act as the authority for both Boards. The chairman gave notice that at the next meeting of the Board he would move that a Special Rate should be struck to cover the Special Joitt Loan of £2OOO. MABSEY ROAD. As it was considered that the footpaths on Massey Road should be formed it was resolved on the motion of the chairman that tenders should be called for the work. It was agreed that the path on Massey Road should be 12 feet wide and should have a fall of six inches into the water-table on the eastern side from the Station to Martin's road and that any surplus spoil should be removed from the eastern side and placed in the gullies on the western portion. Mr Lupton remarked that the gullies should be raised and pipes put in, to which the chairman replied that he considered everything would be provided for in the specification referred to. white's koad. Mr Lupton enquired what progress had been made in respect of the work on White's road and the chairman stated that metal had been ordered but nothing further could be reported at present. It was also decided that three trucks of metal should be procured and placed on Massey Road from Martin's Road to Brown's Road. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to the sum of £26 15s lid were passed for payment ■ —*~ WAIAU PA Since assuming the duties of postmistress at Waiau Pa, which she did in January, 1913, as a temporary measure at first to oblige the settlers, Mrs Evans has seen a considerable increase in postal business locally, including the opening of the office as a telephone bureau. Only comparatively recently a party telephone wire was installed at the wharf end of the district and similar telephonic extensions in the opposite direction, viz. to the far end of the Creamery road, are only awaiting plant to be carried out. A petition is now being numerously signed asking the Postal Department to create the office as a Money Order office. Application is also being made for the erection of a pillar-box at the cross-roads by the Public Hall. Thi3 is a most desirable facility as the spot is some two miles from the post office aud besides being to the interests of residents in the vicinity of the Wharf it would otherwise be largely used, seeing that children now attend school in the Public Hall and that the school building is to be removed to that locality.

The present condition of the roads in the Waiau district is worse than for many yeara past and mud everywhere is abundant. With a view of remedying affairs theßiding member (Mr J. Henry) is being petitioned to convene a meeting of ratepayers to discuss the advisability of raising a loan for the purpose of metalling the roads.
