AUFRISTON
FARMERS' UNION. A large and representative gathering of farmers met in the Alfriston Hall on Thursday evening, May 24th, Mr F. M. Allen presiding. The principal business was the submission of correspondence from the Government Department detailing the manner in which Income Returns should be filled up. The meeting proved very beneficial and instructive.
The Secretary (Mr H. Moody) asked the farmers to support the local branch as it was the only organisation in the district to watch and to work on behalf of the settlers on any matter of interest that might arise from time to time. The chairman was accorded a hearty vote of thanks on the motion ofMrG. Mclnnes. PAPAKUBA BOAD BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Papakura Road Board was held in the Board's office, Alfriston, on Monday last. ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN, Mr E. D. McLennan was reelected chairman and thanked the members for the trust and confidence placed in him. He hoped the same good feeling and support would be accorded to him in the future as in the past. NEW MEMBERS. Mr McLennan then heartily welcomed the new member, Mr VV*. T. Haft, on his election to office. —Mr Hall briefly replied hoping his services would prove beneficial. MYERS' ROAD A letter from the Manurewa Town Board disclaiming any liability to the maintenance of this boundary road was again brought forward and the clerk was instructed to write to the effect that if the question was not settled amicably other steps would have to be taken to° compel the Town Board to recognise its legal liabilities. SCORIA. The chairman reported that the purchase of scoria on the old railway line from Lupton's Crossing to the Papakura Stream had been completed at a satisfactory price. RATES. The chairman gave notice of motion to strike a general rate of three-eights of a penny in the pound on all rateable property in the Papakura Road District etc, the same to be moved at the next meeting, on June 25th. BROOKBYCLEVEDON ROAD. Messrs Reid and Trimble reported as to the conference concerning this road with the Wairoa Road Board members. They had, he said, met that day and had been over the road. Owing to the extensive slip through tho recent floods the Board had been compelled to close the road and the work was of such magnitude as to warrant united action by both Boards to approach the authorities for a grant of £2OO. It was resolved that a request should be made for a grant of £2OO for immediate expenditure.
ROAU9. General regret was expressed by members that the weather was preventing important metal contracts being completed, fully recognising that only absolutely necessary heavy cwting could be done. The clerk was instructed to collect accounts for gorse cutting and failing the demand being paid within fourteen days, the penalty to be added and the whole sum to be sued for. A large amount of work was agreed to re cleaning water-tables and other routine work. FINANCE. Accounts amounting to £134 Is were passed for payment.
The ladies of the local Red League met last week at Mrs P. Aicken's, l»rookby, in goodly numbers in spite of very showery weather. Letters of appreciation were read from " boys " at the front acknowledging with grateful thanks parcels received from the local League, thus cheering on the workers to continue in the noble cause.
