PAPAKURA.
A meeting was held in the Parish Hall on Wednesday evening last to form a Literary and Debating Society for Papakura and the district. Mr D. W. Jones was voted to the chair. The following officers were ap-. pointed: Pipsident, Mr D. W. Jon6s vice-Presidents, Rev W. C. Wood and Rev T. F. Jones ; secretary, Mr Beaton, senr.; treasurer, Mr W. Crawford; Messrs E. D. McLennan, S. Evans, and C. J. Moon, and J. Whitaker were appointed the committee. The chairman expressed the opinion that the time had arrived when Papakura should be able to successfully promote such a society which was calculated to increase interest in reading and intellectual pursuits and should form a means for the better understanding between the various members of the community among whom they lived. He trusted all would help to make the Society a success. Rules were then submitted and approved of. It was decided fo hold the meetings on alternate Thursdays, the first to be held on Thursday the 7th June. It was agreed that the committee appointed should arrange for the place of meeting and also for the subjects for discussion. As the Military Authorities have reason to believe that there are a number of "shirkers" in the district who come within Clause 35 (known as "the family shirkers" clause) it is more than likely that a Recruiting Sergeant will visit Papakura and district at an early date to look up the defaulters.
