PATRIOTIC CONCERT.
The Premier Hall, Pukekohe, was filled with an appreciative audience on Tuesday evening last when a concert was held in aid of the provision of Soldiers' Comforts, the proceeds being devoted to the local branch of the Women's Patriotic League. Miss L. Townson, as organiser, is to be congratulated on the excellence of the entertainment provided. There was a patriotic and loyal appearance about the stage, which, decorated by flags and flowers, presented a bright and cheery aspect. Opening with an overture effectively rendered by Miss Townson (piano), Mr Frank Amodeo (clarionet) and Master George Tupp (flute), Miss Jessie Bartlett sang " The Blind Ploughman " in pleasing stylo. Mr Horace V. Gribble, always a favourite, then gave a character sketch " Sam Wellor " (from Dickens' Pickwick Papers) to the delight of all, Mr Frank Amodeo followed with a clarionet solo " Erani " materfully executed, M adame Chambers afterwards singing " The Waltz Song " 1 effectively. A pianoforte solo " Finlandia " was played by Miss Townson faultlessly and Master George Tupp's flute playing of " Carnival do Venice " was well executed. . For the musical monologue " The Country Curate," Mr H. V. Gribble was again heartily applauded. In an instrumental trio "Do Hear the Gentle Lark," Misß Townson (piano), Mr Amodeo (clarionet) and Master Tupp (flute), all played their respective parts creditably and Madame Chambers in her song " Ecstasy " was well received and applauded. Two proj raising local players, the Misses Muriel Webb and Linda Perkins, pupils of Miss Townson, effectively played a pianoforte duet " Dance Espagnole." A flute solo by Master George Tupp followed and again showed him to be a master of that instrument. " When Shadows Gather" was pleasingly rendered by Miss Jessie Bartlett. Mr F. Amodeo favoured the audience with a delightful clarionet solo " Miranda," followed by a pianoforte solo " Duetto " by Miss Townson. In a monologue " Home Sweet Home," Mr Horace V. Gribble exhibited great talent and he was obliged to respond to a recall, '' My Old Pipe." Mr A. B. Barter, who acted as stage manager throughout the evening, at the close expressed, on behalf of the ladies, his thanks for all who had assisted towards the success of the gathering.
