A small supplementary draft of recruits that went into camp last Tuesday included Messrs J. Tooman (Pukekohe East) and T. E. McMillan (Waiukul.

Officers and members of the Loyal Pukekohe Lodge, M.U., are requested to attend the annual church parade on Sunday next. Meet in the Lodge Room at 10.30 a.m. prior to service at the Methodist Church.

Wallace's farm at Okaeiia, Waerenga, on Tuesday June sth. The auctioneers draw particular attention to the standard of the dairy herd included in the sale, comprising 7."> choice dairy cows.

At the Farmers' Union Conference on Tuesday the Clevedon branch had two remits considered, both of which were rejected. The first, proposed by Mr Fawcett and seconded by Mr Hull fWaiuku) read as follows: " That it be a recommendation to the Efficiency Board that all land owners should be compelled to plant crops according to the value and suitability of their holdings and that a payable price should be fixed for their products during the period of the war." The second remit was : " That the Second Division should be immediately classified and called up in rotation, instead of by ballot, as at present." Mr Gandy, with Mr Fawcett as seconder, presented the remit.

A remit advocating temporary nationalisation of land came before the Farmers' Union Conference on Tuesday, but it received but scant consideration. The motion, which stood in the name of the Buckland branch, read as follows :—" That this conference appoint a, deputation to wait upon the Acting-Prime Minister, to urge the importance of the nationalisation of the land and the conscription of labour, as being the only means of keeping up the production of the country and safeguarding the interests of men who have gone to the front." Mr Gummer, in moving the remit, said that the idea of the Buckland branch was that the nationalisation 1 of the land should be only temporary. The motion was seconded without comment by Mr J. W. Johns, of Pukekohe. No other delegate rose to tpeak, and without more ado the motion was put and lost on the voices by an overwhelming majority of sonorous " noes."

An appreciative audience was present on Wednesday evening at the Salvation Army Hall, in Pukokolie when Lieut. Col. Mclnues (Chief Secretaiy for the Dominion) delivered an interesting lecture on the war work of'' The Array." The Mayor (Mr H. G. E. Mason) and Crs A. B. Barter (Deputy Mayor), Patterson and Stembridge together with Mr J. F Deane (Town Clerk) attended as representing the Borough Council and His Worship welcomed Lieut. Col. Mciones and expressed his appreciation of the noble work which the Army was doing for the benefit of tho " boys " at the Front. The lecturer expressed his thanks for the official welcome aceordol to him and at the same time desired to express his appreciation of tho gift of £lO by tho Pukekoho Women's Patriotic League on behalf of tho Soldiers' Comforts Fuud. Tho lecturer throughout was listened to with rapt attention and in connection with the war work of the Army - it is gratifying to note that every penny donated to the Army's work | is devotod for the good of the soldier no expenses being deducted from tho donations. In the contributions to the Do minion Gift Fund .for last month Pukekohe with 324 parcels was second on the list of the country districts forwarding gifts, being only beaten by Hamilton (450 parcels). In the Auckland Supreme Court yesterday a verdict of not guilty was returned by the Jury in the case of Cecil Mardon, who was indicted for stealing cattle, the property of Mr C J. Drake, near Whangamarino.

Pukekohe bowlers are notified by advt. that a special match is to be played on tho Pukekohe Green on Monday, June 4th, (King's Birthday), Pukekohe Bowlers v. visiting Freemasons, play to commence at 1 p.m. sharp. All bowlers wishing a game should notify the secretary as early as possible.

A picture that Pukekohe patrons have been waiting to see for a considerable time " Rags" has been secured by the Lyceum management for screening at the Premier Hall on Monday evening next. " Rags" is considered to be the finest play in which Mary Pickford has yet appeared in and it is likely that a very big attendance will be present. The annual meeting of the Pukekohe District Golf Club was held recently in Mr W. P. Hopkins' office. Mr H. H. O'Loughlen, hon. secretary presented the annual report which showed satisfactory results, a credit balance of £l7 being in hand to start the present year. The following officers were elected :—President, Mr Jas. Koulston; vice-president, Mr J. W. Johns ; captain, Mr H. Bockett; treasurer, Mr A. Grigor; hon secretary, Mr H. H. O'Loughlen ; committee : Messrs Bayly, Hopkins and Barter The committee have arranged for the opening of the season to take place on Saturday, June 2nd, commencing at 2 p.m., when a mixed foursome handicap will be played. Players may choose their own partners and opponents.

The final portion, about threequarters of a mile in length, of the Pokeno-Mercer section of the railway grade easement works, was opened for use on Sunday last and trains have been running daily since then over it instead of on the old track. The delay in bringing this route into operation wasihe fact that with the land of a swampy nature time had to be allowed for the fillings to settle down. The alterations of the line are now completed as far as Runciman and pending a start being made there the ManurewaWiri section is under construction
